  1. Another dry but mainly cloudy start to the day and still chilly despite the lack of wind. A bit of ice on the windscreens early on, but with the earlier starts to daylight hours, this soon cleared.
  2. I spoke too soon. More cloud than sun today and really chilly when the sun disappears.
  3. I returned from abroad in late April 1994 and was able to enjoy an extended break round Britain before heading back to the grindstone. I recall it as a good summer, but not as hot and sunny as the following summer, and a highlight for me was climbing Ben Nevis on a perfect summer's day in mid-June 1994 and finding thick snow on top!
  4. Yes, another nice start to the day, with little ice on the windscreens to worry about early. Sun should soon warm things up and a good day in prospect.
  5. I got caught out yesterday afternoon with the day's only rain shower. A cold, cloudy and bit misty start to today but has now cleared to a bright, even sunny, late morning. Hoping the showers stay away this afternoon.
  6. I was still working full time in 2006, so didn't get to enjoy the sun and heat much in July of that year, but yes, it was hot and sunny that month. 2018 was much better from a personal point of view when I was able to enjoy the summer more.
  7. Nice to wake up to a cold, clear and sunny start to the day, and hopefully it will stay dry right the way over the weekend.
  8. Summer8906 I've been having a look at Brazell's London rainfall stats for the period 1900-64. 7 out of the 8 months from July 1960 to Feb 1961 were wetter than average, with the eighth month - Dec 1960 - coming in at 96% of average, so yes, a truly horrendous period, which I remember from Oct 1960 (231% of average) when we arrived back in the UK after 3 years in the Tropics.. Looking at the stats, there was only one period of 8 consecutive wetter than average months and that was March to October 1917. Other consecutive periods were 7 (Apr to Oct 1924) and 6 (May to Oct 1903 and Apr to Sept 1946). Other notable periods of above average rainfall, but not consecutive months, were 1927 - 1928 (8 out of 10), 1937 (10 out of 12), 1941 (8 out of 9) and 1952 (7 out of 8). Compare these with the 15 consecutive less-than-average rainfall months from Oct 1920 to Dec 1921, and we have some idea of how variable our weather can be!
  9. Another wet start to the day, but quickly cleared to leave a half-decent bright morning with just a passing shower or two, but still on the chilly side.
  10. I started at grammar school in 1960 and yes, it was wet up until March 1961. However dirty shoes = 25 lines, those were the days. 40 years on, 2000/1 was very similar, although I recall the worst of the autumn 2000 flooding ended at the start of December.
  11. damianslaw no such luck in the south of the region. Showery rain on and off since this morning, although signs of it easing off now for the last couple of hours of daylight, and decidedly chilly compared with previous days
  12. Heavy overnight rain which fortunately stopped as I headed for a paper at 7.30am. Dry at the moment but I don't think that's going to last, with the emphasis on potentially heavy showers throughout the day. Noticeably cooler despite the lack of wind.
  13. Wet and windy. Rain is not particularly heavy, but add in the wind factor and it's a miserable morning. Hopefully it will brighten up later.
  14. Best - 2003 and 2020, both dry and sunny. Worst - 2008 and 2013, both with early and cold Easters, plus the start of March 2018 with The Beast from the East.
  15. Cherry blossom on the trees, looks lovely but far too early in my view. Dry but cloudy all day but no sign of the forecast rain yet.
  16. Joe Snow I think it was just the other day, Sat 17th perhaps, when Nantwich was the warmest place in the UK. I was away so details are sketchy.
  17. I should be so lucky! I was at Blackburn and it rained all Friday and on Saturday afternoon and overnight into Sunday. Yesterday was nice but the abiding memory of the weekend was trying to avoid getting wet. No such problems back home this morning and really mild again. Let's hope the early blossom doesn't get affected by a cold snap.
  18. A bright mild start to the day after overnight rain. I am away this weekend and hope this pattern of weather continues.
  19. Nice start to the day and really mild, but rain has set in during the afternoon and a thoroughly gloomy and miserable end to daylight hours.
  20. A gloomy but passable day, with spits and spots of rain in the air but nothing more. It looks as though we are in for wetter weather over the next couple of days, although we are not in the yellow weather warning zone.... yet.
  21. Easter is at the end of March this year, so a snow event seems on the cards, think 1975, 2008 and 2013. Not today though, mild and damp after overnight rain
  22. 2002 included severe thunderstorms and flooding in the period 29th July to 9th August (Eden), which included the Pickering (North Yorkshire) floods on 1st August following 115mm of rain overnight at Fylingdales on the North Yorkshire Moors and which I experienced at first hand. A quick flick through Eden's very good book on British Weather Disasters reveals 1972 as the year with the fewest entries (since 1970), just three, two for thunderstorms and flooding in July and August and one for gales in December. I think that probably says a lot about the weather that year!
