  1. A balmy -0.2C this morning with grey skies and no sign of snow yet. I wasn't expecting much from this but it'll be a bit of a flop if nothing happens at all!!!
  2. Mullender! You're back??! Where was it you were again? How was it? It certainly went quickly... You missed a good snowfall the other day. But I don't think much has melted. What depth have you go there? Just about to go but then noticed your post
  3. Hi Dogs, Yes I'm here... for 5 mins... then off to watch Casualty  I think next week is looking very interesting, going to be watching each model run carefully. Perhaps we could see a similar low to the one which brought lots of rain, but with some hill snow, without the marginality. What do you reckon? Ian, on the model thread you mentioned >30cm spot snow depths for parts of the south west. Out of interest, which parts of the region were they for? (BTW... will it snow in Cardiff? )
  4. Does that GM correlate with the precipitation intensity colours like the NAE? All the ppt. looks blue - would that indicate light ppt. or is the intensity shown by the size of the icons?
  5. The good news is Tuesday now has Gloucestershire in the advisory area "UK regions: Wales South West England Heavy Snow Tue 12 Jan There is a moderate risk of severe weather affecting many parts of Wales and SW England. There is potential for further outbreaks of snow developing later on Tuesday. Snow will become heavy and prolonged in places and there will be drifting in strong winds. There will also be further icy stretches on roads and pavements. Issued at: 1236 Sat 9 Jan" AND WEDS TOO! OK so I think what is going to happen is a band of precipitation will move up from the SW, falling as snow, getting as far inland as West Mids, stalling, then retreating back, perhaps rain/freezing rain for a time in some areas.
  6. I've been talking to the cat and it says the MetOffice is wrong
  7. MetOffice have taken off the advisory for Gloucestershire on Monday now
  8. I think Gloucestershire has done pretty well out of this so far :-) I keep wondering every morning if there has been fresh snowfall because there's still 5 inches of snow outside, with no thaw and an ungritted/ploughed road! Still, I'm looking forward to some more this weekend and hopefully some more decent falls next week during the possible Atlantic attack
  9. Can't argue with this from the MetOffice, for Sunday: "Cloudy with spells of snow, perhaps turning heavy at times through the day. A biting northeasterly wind will making it feel raw and cause snow to drift. Maximum temperature 2 °C. Updated: 0343 on Sat 9 Jan 2010"
  10. PS Is anyone else finding the same? ...every time I look out of my window in the morning I think there's been another heavy snowfall! It is still so white out there. So nice to have a proper snowfall with no sign of the dreaded brown slush.
  11. The NAE wants to give 1-4mm precipitation up to Monday morning. 4mm = about 4cm here  Nothing major but might fill in some of the footprints...
  12. Yes, this is the GFS ppt. for Weds. On this run would give snow to many, but may turn to rain or freezing rain for a time with the 0C 850 isotherm over Devon and Cornwall. Still a lot to resolve on the detail.
  13. Yes, I think you're right there!! My standards have been raised somewhat by the last snowfall. Hoping for more proper snow this weekend/next week sometime. Still it's nice to see it falling. It's currently light - if it was rain it would be a steady drizzle. Enough to be noticeable but far from being disruptive or giving much accumulation.
  14. WOW very heavy snow now. At this rate, if it kept up like this we might have 2cm of snow in 24 hours time!!!!!
  15. Snow currently falling at about 10 flakes per hour..........
  16. OK NAE going for light snow out to 6Z on Sunday, giving 1mm. However it's only out to 6Z so the heavier ppt. may well spread across later http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/01/08/basis06/ukuk/rsum/10011006_0806.gif
  17. Yes GFS 6Z upgrading ppt. intensity run by run now. Now up to 2.5mm/hr, and we know that is only a guide to the general spread so I wouldn't be surprised to see much heavier bursts in there. http://charts.netweather.tv/gfsimages/gfs.20100108/06/66/ukprec.png Now just waiting to see what the NAE has to say
  18. Those looks like upper fronts on the faxes. I'm not sure whether these are conducive to snow?
  19. Post number 1002!!! Just realised I've got over 1000 posts. Not sure that's something to celebrate really Night all. PS temp is -4.9C so yes warmer than Staverton.
  20. What happened? Seemed a valid viewpoint to me...
  21. Yes dogs, Cleeve Hill. smarty81, a friend gave me a lift up Cleeve Hill, they have a 4x4. Brought the sledge this time, didn't walk. Roads are fine away from the side roads which haven't been gritted - the B road up the hill is fine but the stretch to the golf course is iced over.
  22. Thanks, yes it was rather alpine up there in the snow! The depths were very variable. On average there was about 7 inches, but it ranged from 1 inch where the wind had blown the snow off the tops of surfaces to several feet where the snow had collected in gullies and/or drifted. Thanks for the update Ian. Another one to watch!
  23. Ian, what kind of depths could be... potentially, if the worst came to the worst, be talking of across the country?
