  1. We might well have a decent cold spell this winter as it’s only early January after all. My only advice is not to read about it on the MOD thread as they seem to kill any cold by all the hot air that’s expelled on there. They’ve melted more ice sheets than any other man-made global warming has ever achieved.
  2. Does SSW stand for Sweltering South Westerlies by any chance?
  3. And that is why I no longer post in MOD thread. Anybody not sharing their view of the next upcoming ice age gets eaten alive in there. It really needs sorting out.
  4. I’m afraid some posters only see what they want to see on here, and if it’s a downgrade on a snow fest then the charts are wrong or they’ll come good in the fabled 10 days time. I’m convinced if they lived in the Bahamas they’d still find a synoptic chart that would suggest snow. People really need to think before posting and stop misleading those that perhaps don’t understand meteorology as much as others.
  5. Not being an expert on it, but I would imagine rapid warming in the Arctic and ever decreasing sea ice isn’t helping. Higher sea surface temperatures would make it more difficult to tap into real cold as well.
  6. Maybe it’s not such a bad thing with the new lockdown. At least we might be able to get outdoors and get some fresh air. I’d just like it to be dry more than anything, whether it be warm or cold.
  7. And perhaps that’s why the misleading over enthusiastic posts need to be curbed, so that the crushing disappointment is avoided or at least diminished.
  8. Possibly, but I can see what an outcry that would cause. I think better moderation is needed to sort the wheat from the chaff. It’s a difficult line to tread whatever way you do it. Something does need to be done though as it’s becoming a farce.
  9. I think maybe this was aimed at me and perhaps a few others but I’ll take the bullet for it. Yes this did used to be an excellent forum, full of good information and advice. However what we’ve seen this last four or five years is perhaps too much information available and not enough knowledge to process it. After last nights 18z I cringed when I saw posts with “Boom”, “In the bag” and “nailed” etc etc etc. Nothing in meteorology is ‘nailed’ until you actually see it fall out of the sky, and these are the kind of posts that I’m aiming my criticism at. It’s in no way helpful to people trying to find their way around the world of weather, and of course the backlash that followed when it all went wrong was in a large extent down to posts like these. All I can say is thank god there was no Internet and weather forums when I was learning about meteorology. If there had been I’d have probably given up and taken up another hobby. All my learning was done from books written by experienced meteorologists and ‘nailed’ was certainly never mentioned in any of them. Excitement at a possible upcoming cold spell is perfectly understandable, but many of those comments last night were not helpful, not educational and sometimes downright misleading. I just hope we all learnt at least something from this debacle and perhaps the moderators will remove the less helpful ones in future. kind regards and good evening.
  10. I’m just wondering rather than having model verification stats, we should perhaps have poster verification stats. That way we can see who it’s worth paying attention to and who to disregard.....just a thought. ??
  11. I’m afraid writing off winter on January the 3rd is almost as ridiculous as some of the ‘new ice age cometh’ posters. I think I’ll leave it to the experts. Let’s face it, if the worlds most powerful super computers can’t predict the weather then what chance has anyone else got. I shall seek model guidance from my seaweed and the behaviour of grebes in future.
  12. I’ve been on here more or less the same amount of time as you and concur that it’s become ridiculous. There are a few sensible old time posters that keep things real, but the rest of the posts really need deleting. That’s why I don’t post on there anymore.
  13. Disappointment for those that wish to see snowy weather and cold.
  14. Yes it’s always safely 10 days away. They see one run of stunning charts and they paint a Day After Tomorrow scenario, polar bears and frost fairs on the Thames. Very misleading and will always lead to disappointment I’m afraid.
  15. True, but it’s very misleading for those trying to learn.
  16. I’ll leave the kindergarten to the children thank you
  17. It’s hilariously entertaining as an onlooker, but people that are genuinely trying to learn about the weather it’s a disgrace and half the posts need removing. Too many armchair experts I’m afraid.
  18. I used to work outside all the time and there’s nothing worse than this kind of weather.
  19. Some cold spell this is turning out to be. Bring back the Atlantic, at least it will save on my gas bill.
  20. It’s not difficult is it considering some of the ridiculous posts I’ve read on there. Realistic and pragmatic is the way forward. That’s why I prefer this thread over the MOD.
  21. You are so right. I remember all my five high school years in the 70’s being almost totally snowless give an odd flurry. I don’t recall and proper lying snow at all. Things really aren’t so different now.
