I have to say, having been on the NE coast for a few weeks now there is some security and calm to the west mids weather on the whole. Never seen winds like this weekend past back home. Its pretty scary when you get intense 60 mph gusts for an hour or two! Does put you off living up here permanently, with climate change those north sea lows will only get more intense. At least down here you know, at worst youre talking 50-60mph gusts but its fairly rare on the whole?

As has been said before, what a messy story this morning here. Easily 60mph gusts and the drive from westhill to tarland was interesting at 10am (perhaps idiotic) with several fallen trees or parts of along the roadside. thankfully it eased up and we got to tarland for a decent lil hike, and afterwards my mate and I got down to Montrose a little later for some no nonsense football and a glorious coastal drive down the A92. Not a bad day!

What i cant understand (this is one for those with more met knowledge than i do), is why that trough digging well into E/SE europe cannot move just 500 miles further west but it just never does. I would imagine the jet stream is the significant influencer here, its too strong to allow a NW-SE aligned trough to persist for any length of time, and the other blinking irritating factor in UK synoptics, the azores high!

All to do with the temperature inversion under the high pressure, warmer at higher levels than the surface (exemplified earlier this week by the fact high ground in the southwest was seeing temperatures some 4 to 5c HIGHER than those in the valleys! I guess this is causing such variation in the min temps recorded

i think most of continental europe is in a better position to see these extremes anyway. The landmass effect of colder air aids to cool a larger surface area at least giving southern europe a chance. Too much water modifies the temperatures we can see in this country. It is depressing when southern europe sees snow, or the far southwest of BC has had 3 weeks of snow and bitter temperatures, when its the mildest part of the country. -

I mean, although it is easy to feel resigned given that teleconnections have been working in our favour; solar activity, MJO and QBO phases looking favourable, i wouldnt be as defeatist. Last winter delivered at least a little snow for most of us at some stage (We were lucky in the midlands) and im still fairly confident one of the next few winters will have a decent cold spell at some stage (hardly sticking my neck out here) but i think this winter serves a stark reminder that a fired up jet stream and positive NAO setup will always be the default for the UK, with west or southwesterlies prevailing. This is mainly due to the power of the coriolis force, in the NH pressure systems rarely move from east to west, with the atlantic far too powerful compared to anything else in UK weather setups. When i see a northerly modelled for the UK i always feel uneasy, because i know well that the mid atlantic high is never far away from spoiling the party and blowing troughs to our east out the picture very quickly. A good east or northeasterly is the most exciting it gets really for most, and even then its incredibly difficult to get a UK wide setup where everyone is happy. In summary though, although i feel fairly resigned about this winter too, a cold spell can crop up out of nowhere and i still feel amidst a warming planet, we'll get our chance before long again. -
True! At least using a camera is good evidence for the current situation, then noone can argue otherwise. The higher parts of the black country do well in snowy setups. That said, i know that reading the northwest thread and some local media, Ashbourne up to Buxton got a right old dumping today and google maps showed that the roads were a write off extensively, so its hard to compete with that on a midlands basis (for today at least). I'll shutup now and go back to my snowless cave

I dont think you're really understanding my point. I think my point is pretty robust, in that i dont believe parts of the black country got accumulations to that level. Maybe slushy, grass verges etc, a temporary covering or the odd cm or so, but that video showed significantly accumulating snow, but what i wouldve expected given Matlock (or locally to Matlock) is well located for snow. If you did, well done to you. I got a sugar dusting on the top of my gazebo at best. I'm fine in stourbridge thanks, its a good location for walking and for my day-to-day life.
