  1. is it over? Can I go to bed now? Not feeling too cold at all on the walk back from the pub, plenty lamppost snow but no depths to speak of. Maybe tomorrow morning will bring a surprise, but I won't hold my breath, this is the best I could manage tonight:
  2. Difficult call for the Met Office, all the required specs were in place but perhaps they should have stuck to a yellow until they were certain. People changed their plans on the advice of that orange warning and for a lot of us it hasn't come to fruition
  3. That's the effect of a good Italian lunch, puts the world into perspective
  4. No lamppost in the back garden so a trip to the front door was necessary - very cold, and dare I say it, snow looks a bit heavier in the light of the street lamp. The front garden wall is getting a light covering, and there are some patchy areas on the pavement. Certainly very cold - not really looking forward to my walk - going to dig out the special winter coat - rarely gets an outing. I'll probably be following the forum from the pub on my mobile - locations in posts please (Wallington, Surrey)
  5. I hope the energy I've put into today's anticipation won't be in vain. First it was 2pm, then 4pm, 5pm, 8pm, now it might not happen until 9 or 10pm. I made special plans to go to the pub tonight just for the pleasure of walking there in a blizzard, not so appealing in what amounts to white drizzle, and I'll be glued to the forum instead if the heavy stuff doesn't start before the band!
  6. Well it's been snowing lightly all afternoon, small dry flakes that get blown into corners and crevices as soon as they land. On my way back from the Saturday Sainsburys trip, I drove half a mile up the road to the top of the hill. It's always surprising to see the difference that small increase in elevation makes - only about 10m more. Up there the snow is starting to settle on the pavements and even side roads. My cheapo weather station is back up and running and showing -0.4.
  7. I am disappointed to see that the heavy snow symbols have been removed from the Met Office app, I've been looking at them regularly just for the joy of it
  8. I suppose I should really make the most of the snow free window of opportunity to do some chores. I've just changed the batteries in both my weather stations. The garden reading is -1.5 which I think is too low, and the display on the cheapo station has just failed after changing the outside sensor batteries, so off to buy some more (and wine, could be a long night!)
  9. Just been out for a pond\snow inspection and I have to say, despite looking very pretty, the quality is v poor. Melts when I walk on it leaving muddy footprints in the grass:( I think I've been spoilt by too many trips to the Alps, expectations are high - I'd forgotten what English snow was like;) Still time for improvement though, temps about 1.5c here
  10. Proper snow here in Wallington now! The wind has blown my pond cover about so a trip up the garden is due soon
  11. You can always put your Website URL in your profile - not really advertising;)
  12. Lovely pictures Malcolm, I'm glad you got a couple of good skiing days in. I'm not familiar with Val Cenis, but it looks like the skiing is above the tree line there, it makes me want squeeze in one last trip this year. Will the snow hold out until April for a sneaky long weekend I wonder! Thanks for your weather charts for Andorra. We did have a good trip, and only two days where the skiing was challenging, with snow all day, high winds and low visibility. I had quite a fall on day four which knocked my new found confidence a bit, but despite it looking quite dramatic, no harm done, mostly due to the depth of snow on the pistes, although that run might not have actually been a piste, hard to tell in a snowstorm! It was quite interesting to have rain at resort level and watching it turn to snow at we ascended on the chairlift.
  13. Hard to believe what's in store after today's Springlike weather. We sourced some bubblewrap from a local removal firm and covered the pond just before dark, disturbing lots of frisky frogs. So much spawn, I'm sure some will survive. I've also swept the patio so the snow looks neat, but my partner drew the line at mowing the lawn for me:) Glass of celebration bubbly in hand, and fingers crossed!
  14. Nice of the Beast to pop back and see me, missed it last time, cant wait, might even get to use those neglected sledges! I also have frogspawn to look after, frogs were at it all weekend. Buckets in the kitchen perhaps?
  15. Are you in Croydon? I'm trying to remember who is where when reading the forum from snowy Andorra! My brother just sent me a video is snow in central Croydon, looks fab! So glad you got some, the family thought I was making it up?
  16. A quick post from the coach to Andorra. I'll be missing all the excitement back home this week but will be dropping by to check up on things when WiFi allows. I'll miss that anticipation, watching the radar and lamppost for the first flakes, and the magic as everything turns white. Looks like the South East could be waking up to snow tomorrow, and with more to come, it'll be memorable for sure!
  17. Hi Malcolm, thank you for taking the time to post the charts, it looks like we are in for quite a mixed week. I'm obviously rather horrified by the prospect of rain at 2000m - I had one afternoon skiing in the rain in Courcheval last year and it wasn't pleasant - will head high on Thursday if things are still looking wet, or go sightseeing instead. I presume that low is the one that might bring a blizzard (or warmer air) to the south here on Friday? However I am a little bit glad that we didn't choose the French or Austrian Alps for this week as the cold there looks quite incredible. I'll also be a little sad to miss all the excitement in the UK, I could have skied to work! Weird that I hadn't really considered that the 850 charts would be the "ground" temp at altitude.
  18. Hi Malcolm, as you can imagine I have been watching next week's weather charts unfold with great interest and I would really appreciate you posting some charts come Friday, a more reliable timeframe for our week away. My limited knowledge at the moment is suggesting a couple of snowy days from midweek, and not such extreme cold. It would be interesting to look at your posted charts along with the usual snow-forecast predictions to see how they correlate. I'm used to looking for those magical -5 uppers, 528 dam line etc for the UK, but don't know whether the same applies to the mountains. Is it the wiggles in the isobars (shortwaves?) that suggest instability and the possibility of precipitation - snow hopefully - but just at night of course?
  19. Hi Malcolm, I can't push back my week in Andorra and, sad as I am to miss all the excitement in the UK, we are flying out Sunday, so I would be interested in seeing any updated charts. I've been trying to work out how far that Siberian cold will extend and whether I'll need extra thermal layers, or t-shirts for the slopes. Snow-Forecast has been showing snow showers and sunny spells for the end of this week, so it would be good to have a look at next week's predictions Thanks Claire
  20. So there's going to be snow here the week I go off skiing, that's great news. The first massive dumping in a decade and I won't be here to see it Oh the irony of being snowed in at Gatwick
  21. A quick hello from Champoluc! Wonderful conditions here, well mannered pistes and good weather on the whole. The forecast when we left on Wed morning at stupid o clock suggested we may have a lot of cloud and wind, but apart from yesterday morning when we had some low visibility and gentle snow, we have had a lot of sun, perfect for enjoying those amazing mountain views. Champoluc has made a proper skier of me (about time!) @reefseeker, like you, I obsess over the forecasts thinking the snow might melt away as it does in the UK, but no need to worry, plenty of snow so enjoy your week!
  22. I just love those pics, Malcolm, you are lucky to be there in such unusual conditions, it must be amazing to see. It is almost worth missing a day or two skiing! Daniel, great post. I highly recommend breaking your virginity next year, you won't regret it. I spent many years watching the model forum for the tiniest chance of a flake or two, then in desperation booked a last minute weekend to Scotland in Jan 2015 when the snow was good there. I fell in love with skiing that weekend and immediately booked a week in Austria, and have been skiing as often as possible ever since. Once you have a taste of real snow, the disappointment you feel when the models backtrack isn't nearly so painful!
  23. Great photos, hmm hadn't considered Greece for a ski holiday! I've decided to book an extra ski weekend in Italy, using an upcoming milestone birthday as an excuse for such extravagance, and make the most of the snow conditions, which look impressive across the Alps at the moment. On our last two trips we had difficult conditions for the first time and I can understand why having less than perfect eyesight can make it even more challenging. In response to John's post, I wondered if anyone had watched the short documentary Snow Day http://www.snowdayfilm.com? I watched it on Amazon prime the other night and found it quite inspiring, I hope I'll also be able to ski into my 80s if I make it that far. I guess being 2.5hrs drive from a ski resorts helps:)
  24. Thanks for the reassurance, I know March is a long way off in weather terms. I seem to remember reading something a while back about the relationship to southern Spain and the Alps, - a bad year for the Alps meant a good year for SN. From my limited understanding, I presume the weather pattern that is giving the Alps all this snow is the same one keeping SN quite dry and warm at the moment. I might sneak an early February weekend in first, then I can go to Spain happy in the knowledge I saw the Alps at their best, then SN will be a bonus:)
  25. The road does look so scary, I'm with Mrs Blessed on that one, but the views would be worth it, if you're driving it must be hard to keep your eyes on the road! You've got a treat in store Malcolm if you are off to Val d'Isere late Jan, I see there might be even more snow before then - snow depths we can only dream of here:)
