  1. Feeling a bit deflated now. Two weeks build up for 2 cm of wet snow that melts instantly underfoot. Even the MOD thread isn't offering much hope. Here's to February
  2. Woke twice in the night, 2 am no snow 5 am heavy snow! Looked amazing and this morning it looks lovely out there with the snow still coving the trees opposite my house. Not enough to blanket anything as the roads and some pavements are not affected and I can't see it lasting, looks wet rather than cold. Interesting to read the reports on here about the extent of the snowfall
  3. Im trying hard not to stay up all night to watch wet snow struggling to accumulate, but hey, just one more look out then window.....
  4. Been outside for a closer inspection, it seems that despite the lightness of the snow, not every flake is disappearing on impact with the ground. There some evidence of settling. Having just this second watched the weather forecast, not keen on the "petering out" phrase
  5. It's a bit of a trek from my sofa to the lamp post these days but reports on here locally get me off the sofa and out the front door. Yes, latest report is of snow, light, but good size flakes, but no settling yet as it feels too damp. This is the first lamp post watch with the new energy efficient, LED street lamps and I'm pleased to say they still work
  6. yuk, the odd flake amongst the light drizzle, car windscreen damp instead of icy. I presume it won't get any better, warm wins again. I suppose there is still a smidgeon of hope in the early hours, but I think the sledge is staying in the loft
  7. Uh oh, is it me or does it all look a bit sleety west of London on the netweather radar? Temp has notched up half a degree here and my expectations have lowered. I'm feeling deja vu from that last time I stayed up into the early hours watching for snow from the NW and it arrived as rain.
  8. Hi Malcolm, your forecast was spot on! The snow radar in my head woke me at 7am on 1st Jan to see snow falling heavily so we did get 4-6cm and a bit of cautious skiing on fresh snow (as much as my slight hangover and beginners nerves allowed!) It also gave us a chance to see the mountains in a different light, light, less green, with broken clouds, shifting fog patches and the odd flurry, very picturesque. We had a great week anyway and a trip to the glacier on Wednesday gave me a taste of the real stuff too. Looks like anyone going over now will have more snow to look forward to.
  9. We are currently in Zell am See and I am impressed that all the snow we have been skiing on is man made. Conditions are not ideal but we are luckier than some areas as we do have pistes to ski down, and as we are new to skiing, we don't have much experience to compare this to. Very excited to hear that we may see falling snow along with the fireworks on New Years Eve which would be a great way to end our holiday
  10. We're off to Zell am See on Boxing Day, our first ever Christmas holiday break and second ever skiing holiday. I'm watching this thread closely over the next two weeks and praying for a Christmas miracle. Is that GFS run photoshopped to make Austria look snowy!
  11. Hello winter, are we all back in here now? Heavy snow at about 8 am here. The temp dropped over a degree to 0.5c in the preceding hour.
  12. Thanks for the tips Carinthian, I'll certainly have a look at your suggestions. Be great to be out in the snow again before Spring kicks in
  13. After a successful skiing taster weekend in Aviemore at the beginning of Feb, I am wondering if I can squeeze in a week somewhere this year and have been told Austria is a good place for beginners and is likely to have snow in March. Any advice, or longer range forecasts forecasts for mid march. Snow sure and easy for enthusiastic beginners, I like the idea of the ski to the door hotel!
  14. Heavy snow in Wallington, struggling to settle but looks impressive out the window
  15. Thanks for the tip, chance of seeing the northern lights too, what more could I ask for? just beat me to it!
  16. After my weekend in the Cairngorms I've seen what proper snow is like. As nice as it was to see this mornings snow falling I really noticed the difference. Up there even at 5c with around 0c dewpoint the snow was dry, even with the gritted roads. So why is it that when it is 5 here with 0 dewpoint it's damp and dreary? Can't believe I'll have to wait til next winter for a proper snow fix, might try the alps or finland next time I think. This southern england snow just doesnt cut the mustard.
  17. I'd usually be with you on the hunt for a flake or two but here in Aviemore I'm in snow heaven. Pretty much snowing all day at varying levels of intensity, and the locals must be amused by my unhinged excitement. First visit to a very snowy place and it's been quite overwhelming. Wishing you all the luck tonight, will be back to grey sleety London on Monday
  18. I'd usually be completely downhearted by the lack of snow this morning after a promising forecast, but I've taken out insurance this year am flying to Aviemore today for a weekend snow fix. No chance of warm air mixing in up that mountain
  19. Just dropping in from the snow starved south east. This year I decided to get my snow fix by booking a weekend in Aviemore. Just after I booked it looked like all the snow was going to melt before I arrived, but the weather gods have been kind, so now I'm hopeful that there will be plenty of fresh snow for us by Friday. Looking forward to my first ever skiing lesson
  20. The perils of the Fine Offset outlier - and currently it's measuring humidity more akin to the Sahara! Here's an update: I decided to install the pywws software, and after a week or two of intense squinting at my tablet and a steep learning curve, I got it up and running to the stage where I could manually run the hourly command and upload to a website, WOW and Twitter. The next challenge was to get it running when I'm not logged in, and all the talk of scripts, cron and daemon confused me somewhat. Eventually the hours of R&D seem to bother my OH so I took a break;) Last night I got a live logging command working, and reporting all night, but I'm not sure what happens if I log out of the SSH connection yet, or how I stop it running if I need to. Sometimes I just enter a command and see what happens without quite understanding what I'm doing. I just got round to joining Wunderground, and now have spotted my RH readings are decreasing daily as I have most impressive dew points. I suspect that my station electronics have finally broken down, but will see if the removing and replacing the batteries helps before I have to admit defeat and buy a new one:( Regarding the website, I've used a WeatherbyYou template for now, but I'd prefer something more detailed like the Cumulus interface. Has anyone else got any suggestions?
  21. Hi, I'm just about to set up an RPi for the first time and can't decide between WeeWX and pywws, does anyone have any advice? I like the look of the DragonTail site, makes the installation of pywws seem less daunting than the Weewx sourceforge site, which made me feel a bit inadequate reading it last night! However, Weewx seems to get some good reviews.
