  1. All the very best Stewart, your insight will be sorely missed on here. Good Luck.
  2. Since 6am, we have had beautiful clear blue skies, snow at a rate of about 2 on the SM scale and now back to a beautiful blue sky again! Temp currently 0.8°c here after an overnight low of -2.2°c. Edit: and back to snow again....
  3. The poor Daffs in the garden don't know 'weather' they're coming or going at the mo'
  4. Scary Gary, I have never seen those wooden defences before, surely they must only have been a short term solution? Great pics though.
  5. Thanks Dave. The Great Spotted is actually the middle size of the three that are native to the British Isles, the Green being bigger and the Lesser Spotted smaller. The skies have now completely clouded over here too, so from what was a beautiful morning it has now turned into a repeat of the last few days. Temp climbing slowly to 3.5°c.
  6. Following on to my picture posted yesterday of a Green Woodpecker and then a subsequent conversation about other Woodpeckers, This is the female Great Spotted Woodpecker sharing a suet block with a Blue Tit.
  7. Yes a beautiful morning here too, temp reached a low of -1.8°c overnight and is now 2.1°c.
  8. Exactly what this one was doing Jan, apparently they peck at the top of the earth to startle the ants and then bury their beaks and wait for the ants to scurry past, clever little things. We have both the male and the female visit but never together. Thats likely to be the Great Spotted Woodpecker, the red is very visible on its tail feathers. If it's red on it's head, then it's a fairly rare Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
  9. Turning out to be quite a nice day here, broken cloud and less windy than for a few days. Temp holding steady at 2.2°c. Just had a visit from this little lady again
  10. Temp currently 2.2°c here and falling after a high of 3.1°c earlier. Had a few snow flurries earlier, the ones where you have to stop what you're doing and focus All the snow from the weekend has now gone though.
  11. No idea to be honest, I thought something was wrong when I saw the temps being reported yesterday. I guess being 100 miles or so north of you, is making all the difference?
  12. Last of the weekends snow just about hanging on in the garden, just a couple of shaded areas with a patchy covering. Temp here at the mo' 3.7 and rising after a balmy top temp yesterday of 4.1. Driving to Carlisle on Saturday via the notoriously snowy A66, my fingers are crossed for an improving situation!
  13. Temp rising quickly now here, up to 1.2 but as quick as the temp is rising the dp is falling, now -4.5. All the snow on the cars bonnet just slid off but still a few inches on the windscreen, looks quite odd Looks as though we may be in for a bit more?
  14. Wow. I really did not expect this. This in my mind, with no facts to back it up, is now the most memorable winter/(spring) for laying snow I have known. I lived in South London until 1997 and remember the winters of the late 70's and early 80's, since then I have been in Peterborough. This morning I have 17cms on the grass, 12cms on the car and 9cms on my trusty garden table. If it had been just a couple of degrees colder yesterday, I really think I could have been looking at as much as 30-35cms of laying snow but unfortunately as I have said previously, yesterday afternoon, the melt was quicker than the accumulation. As soon as I got up this morning I went out and fed the birds, as I write there is an absolute frenzy out in the garden, I can see, Jackdaws, Wood Pigeons, Magpies, a Jay, Long Tailed Tits, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Coal Tits, Robins, Chaffinches, a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, and a Meadow Pipit. And to top it off, the wife as just brought me 2 toasted bacon sarnies, have I died and gone to heaven??
  15. Just starting to settle on the green part of the garden again after a slow thaw throughout the day. Apart from a brief lull for about an hour earlier, it has been snowing all day. Current temp 0.6 with a dp of -0.4. Deepest measurable depth at the mo' of about 3 cms, which tells me that from about 11ish this morning, it has been melting quicker than it has been accumulating.
  16. A few pics from the garden. Temp 0.8 and rising, dp -0.3 and rising. I could hear the snow falling off of the trees. As a big kid that i am when it comes to snow, I really have had enough now. This weekend last year we had a bbq at home with 20 family and close friends with us, we had a great night, the fire pit glowing until midnight and plenty of beer and wine, o hum.
  17. After my horizontal snow for a few hours this morning here, it has been quite a nice day, dry, bright, cold and breezy. What will tonight bring though? Temp 2.9, dp -2.1.
  18. Have had horizontal snow here since I woke up at 6, curiously though, out of my front window it is blowing from west to east but from my back window its east to west! None of it laying though unfortunately. Temp 2.3 and rising, dp -0.6.
  19. Very heavy snow shower just north of Peterborough at the mo', the flakes are huge! Grass just starting to turn white.
