  1. At the risk of sounding like Gordon Brown...I agree with Nick. There is undoubtedly some broad rotation, but largely at the base, possibly the downdraughts colliding with the prevailing winds leading to some veering?? But as you look up the profile of the Cb there appears to me to be little or no change in wind direction...if you look at any of the supercell vids online, the veering winds are evident at different heights up the cloud.
  2. Strictly FI...but anyone with a weak heart should definitely not look at the GFS charts....uuummmmmmm, beeeeeeeeeerrrrrr!!!! *groooog*
  3. Negative (-ve) as in originating from the negatively charged region of a Cb Here is another cool vid capturing a +CG (caution - don't listen too loudly through earphones and there's swearing at the very end)
  4. You can't beat the thunder from +CGs...this video is probably one of the best I've seen - key ways of identifying them for me are; 1. Often happen shortly before/after a thunderstorm arrives/passes 2. Rattling furniture 3. Incredibly loud, deep peels (and cracks during the peel that sound like a motorbike backfiring) 4. Thunder lasts a lot longer than a normal -ve bolt Hope to get one more storm before this unusually long period of thunder passes (although that would greedy having been fortunate enough to have had 4 thunder days last week alone)
  5. Thunder is my favourite aspect (and the bit that terrified me the most as a youngster). If it's all lightning and no peeling thunder, it's a bit of a disappointment for me. I'd rather 5 flashes and good peels than 50 flashes and all crackly boringness
  6. That's 4 flashes and rumbles now...coming to life now! Yay!
  7. Lovely flash and peel from this pop up cell here...not entirely sure how Blitzortung has translated that in to half a dozen sferics lol There's two separate showers with two distinct updraughts - one which caused the sole flash/peel about 5 mins ago and another barrelling largely straight at me. Got some decent height in the anvil so am surprised there hasn't been a few more flashes to be honest Edit - LOOOOL - as soon as I hit save on that last post, three violet IC strikes shot across the sky
  8. Marvellous...dense overcast schizzle gone, temperature rising, humidity already well up...keeping fingers crossed!!!
  9. Still cloudy here with the rain having on recently stopped. Perhaps worth mentioning is in spite of the cloud cover you can still feel some heat of the sun.
  10. That's possibly because it's been cloudy for quite a while now. Feels cooler here than yesterday however by this time there had been some sun by now. As soon as the sun comes out I suspect the humid feel will rocket (as it did yesterday).
  11. Tower rocketing just south of here, getting very good height with pileus just visible (I would say 10-15 miles south). Could spark soon I would guess.
  12. Why do you believe more CAPE should be shown and what makes you think tomorrow will be insane? There's a risk of some heavy showers, perhaps few thundery, but not convinced about more than that!?
  13. In my opinion the Met's warning for this part of the world was spot on. The rain was absolutely torrential for 15-20 minutes, with widespread flash floods and extremely treacherous roads (I would know as was driving at the time, quite perilously in a few occasions). Given there appears to be agreement that the atmosphere could be primed for initiation into evening hours I wouldn't rule out anything in the coming hours to be honest. Edit - skies clearing now to the west and I can make out some Cu trying to build.
  14. Rain eased in Orpington now but for 15-20 mins was torrential!!!
  15. Awesome close CG and peel of thunder!!! I thought the rain earlier this week was mad but this is something else!
  16. Exceptionally heavy rain and flash flooding here in Orpington at the moment. Not heard thunder though which is surprising given the nature of the precipitation!!
  17. How tables turn, lol - blissful blue skies here in London, very warm in the sun but notably fresher.
  18. Instability looks meagre (although there is some reasonable MUCAPE drifting north from the SW into SE Wales/S/W Midlands).
  19. It is looking like a very convective period of weather coming up, particularly so from Monday right the way through the week! The jet will be in play across S England in particular so the potential for some severe convective elements here. Could be an exciting week I think.
  20. Brentwood cell appears to have run out of puff on blitzortung. The Cb itself still looks pretty good but alas, appears it's the one rumble out of that one for me. Might still get a bit of a soaking to help cool what is undoubtedly another VERY warm and humid day.
  21. Seems to me that this Brentwood cell is benefiting from greater steering winds aloft compared to previous cells. Updraft column(s) visibly detached from the splaying anvil and downdraughts! In terms of movement, to my eye it seems to be trying to veer to my W/SW but I haven't had a trained eye fixed on it for long.
  22. Just heard a rumble from the Essex cell drifting south - what an awesome couple of days.
