  1. Recon aircraft AF309 now flying into the very southernmost of Irma's outer bands and on the way to investigate. Should get some more data soon.
  2. Here's some radar. It's kind of awesome. https://www.ventusky.com/?p=21.36%3B-70.60%3B8&l=gust
  3. Recon just taking off for Willemstad. Presumably another mission going in for another look. Edit: Strike that, just for the moment. Could actually be a GPS wobble and it may just be standing on a runway.
  4. Makes sense to do that. Power infrastructure will be damaged. It'll be even more damaged if falling lines and flying objects end up blowing things out electrically too.
  5. I don't think people appreciate that if they eye passes over, they might as well be passing through a 40 mile wide F3 tornado. Weighing down a table just outside your patio doors with some kind of small metal object, or relying on loads of glass patio doors and windows for your shelter ... it's just not going to sodding work! Have these people not yet seen Barbuda, Anguilla, St Barts or St Maartens yet? (I mean, they're livestreaming on facebook, after all).
  6. So many people are taking massively inadequate preparations. It's painful to watch them claiming that they're safe.
  7. FWIW, the storm surge over the Turks and Caicos should be higher than previously seen in the leeward islands. Much bigger. Florida still feels miles away when you consider the impact of that.
  8. From a recent watching of the Weather Channel (haven't looked myself), there's the potential of interaction with a developing low N-W of Florida, causing it to strike miami, but then recurve back northward, keeping it on land over Florida and up into the US.
  9. Topic needs an edit for hurricane status. Alas, I don't have those rights. 11 named storms though. Wow.
  10. Cheers. That's much appreciated. I'll be honest.... never envisaged myself being in the position of having this conversation!
  11. OK, this is pretty damn pathetic here, and I feel pretty bad for asking, but it seems that I've accidentally managed to get my partner emotionally invested in a tree. I've read reports that Hector survived, albeit badly damaged. Can anyone confirm?
  12. I dunno. I return to this forum to watch hurricanes, and two hurricanes in, I've followed two hurricane names likely to be retired. Am I bad luck or something?
  13. Pivot, Jammer, AND blocker. #DerbyJoke #ProbablyTheOnlyOneThatGotIt #SorryNotSorry #ThisThingIsIntenseAndINeedToHaveHumour
  14. To be fair, wind wise she only needs to sustain another 6mph for a minute... Pressure wise she has a ways to go.
  15. Either the president looked at the main island of A&B (which didn't take the full hit) and assumed that that was the full impact of it, or he was downplaying things for some reason. All I can say is that with 90% of houses destroyed, one fatality and only one would be bloody remarkable out of 1600 people... and if true, it's a real reason to be relieved.
  16. Actually feeling a bit numb from all this today. On the plus side, the central pressure's climbed a bit, with the latest VDM at 1136z showing 923mb Think we've seen all the cat5-ness any of us could possibly want to see at this point... and then some.
  17. Southern Florida has been in the middle of the spread all along. Uncertainty is definitely increasing, and yet that fact seems vaguely consistent, which may or may not mean something.
  18. RE: Barbuda's elevation. It only has one meaningful town. Apparently, it's 9m. http://elevationmap.net/codrington-height--uk#menu2
  19. Bit of good news... this livestream still being active... There's a sign of life on St. Maarten still.
  20. Very different for anything that took the direct hit. Currently, anything that goes through the eyewall comes out the other side completely devastated. We've yet to see what happens after passing through the eyewall a second time.
