  1. Forgive me if I put a tad more credence into the thoughts of Matt and Ian than yourself... alas, it may not be a classic cold spell, but there is room for it to be more than you are suggesting. There will be countless more changes in tonight's and the rest of this week and weekends runs, some milder, some colder. And I will take the thoughts of those who have access to other models, and infinitely more knowledge and experience than most of us, any day.
  2. Great tweet by Matt Hugo! not expecting a '2 day toppler' as the forums name it
  3. Based on that particular run maybe, but not on the previous runs or the runs to come I would imagine. Still, changes to come. I don't have an issue with 9/10 day charts being posted but when people so to remember they aren't gospel, and that isn't exactly how things will pan out and potentially very different to how things will.
  4. It's a day 9 chart though, so unlikely to verify as such. I still think we are a long way off knowing how this will pan out after the cold next week, however it ends up. These runs have had the mood go up and down like a yo-yo, it's as if people forget the previous run or other models. Trends are trends yes, but too early to write it off yet.
  5. I would imagine the metoffice update today will be a little more positive, but let's wait and see. If you saw the weather for the week ahead with John Hammond last night then the bbc/ met office clearly think something is afoot. Also, after December a 3 day transient northerly will do me for starters! With this sort of change in the NH, then the rest of Winter is certainly going to be more interesting.
  6. haha, I wouldn't say it's just this year. Wobbles happen every single year, ever since I have began using this site 13 years ago, and they happen with every single cold spell. Doesn't mean this is just a wobble, it might be a trend, but it might not be!
  7. I think people need to be patient, I have never known a cold spell occur without wobbles in the models. The op clearly a milder option from the ens later on, so I would suggest waiting for today's runs before losing too much heart. I'm not guaranteeing we will see upgrades, but it isn't out of the question so don't fear people.
  8. https://t.co/M7akdp5c4g This update from John Hammond gets particuarly interesting 3 minutres in, explaining about the high pressure in the North Pole displacing the cold air, definitely corresponds with the models!
  9. And of course, the ECM shows 4 days of temperatures cold enough for snow, and as we all know, any finer details (if this evolution or something similar came to fruition) would not be known until much nearer the time. We have all been caught out/pleasantly surprised by unexpected snowfall in the past, so just getting the cold is the first big step!
  10. Wet snow and sleet in Swinton, Manchester - not laying, wet ground, but surprise to me as expected rain. 1.4oC on my outside thermometer! Tonight has become a little more interesting..
  11. Certainly very windy in Manchester, wheely bins all over the place and front garden gate broke. Howling away too!
  12. Awesome, some similarly great shots from Manchester: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/manchester-lightning-storm-thunder-pictures-9569812
  13. Exactly the same thing here in Manchester around 10pm, tonnes of lighning, very little thunder and torrential rain. Lasted about 30-45 minutes. Loved it, despite being stuck at a bus stop in it... in Salford, there was huge forklightning covering the skies. (See above!)
  14. It's now officially the hottest July day on record!
  15. @bbcweather on twitter says Heathrow has hit 33oC. Metoffice twitter listing 32.5oC. 36oC now being projected this afternoon, July record looking vulnerable...
  16. Crazy that the July record is (I would now say) likely to fall today but on the first day of the month of all times!
  17. A balmy 27oC at 8.30am at Heathrow, even rainy Manchester is currently 24oC... gonna be a scorcher for sure!
  18. That should be interesting, see if we get a sprinkling or not!
  19. There was (last time I looked anyway) a band of ppn due to move down over Saturday night too...
  20. Yes could be heading this way.... tomorrow looks interesting when the northerly winds swing in! Exciting times ahead. This 'less cold' isnt turning out too badly, and has certainly still felt very cold due to wind.
  21. By tomorrow afternoon/early evening really, but will still be colder overnight tonight as temps drop. Dew points have remained fairly low today!
  22. Oh yes METO forecast for NW on their website looks fairly promising:
