Conflicting reports on here tonight - is Huddersfield is the firing line?
Yes, looks as though Huddersfield could catch that first band. Thereafter it will be showers or dry
-
Finally! Best snow in Preston since 2010!
Started off as light sleet, within minutes it was heavy dry snow, all surfaces covered within minutes!
Wonderful!!!
Glad to hear some in the NW are getting snow, after the rain fears. Have some relatives down Preston way, i know snow can be a rarity for them so glad you're getting some
-
Only a few hours of snow... If you don't want it, I'll be more than happy for "only a few hours of snow"
Nonetheless, its one of those situations that will keep on developing so be interesting too see what happens although some could end up in disappointment I suspect.
Relative to what could have been, but yeah, i'll take any! Looking good for some snow showers Sunday onwards for your region Paul?
-
3.8c please
-
Should still reach Sheffield i think, although probably only a few hours of snow. Main band to go to the south of us.
-
Solid 4 or 5 hours of snow for us if this comes off
Yeah, although at this timeframe i'd stick to the radar. I'll plump for 2-3 hours of moderate snow for South Yorkshire, before clearing away. Widely around 5cm, possibly more on high ground

GFS 18z take. South Yorkshire the sweet spot of our region. 3-5hours of moderate snow, probably 5cm-10cm (the higher end with height)

yes, died off but thats because the main ppn is now approaching the coast of ireland. I still think part of it at least looks on course for us, judging by latest radar frames. It is going more east now as that streamer was so if it keeps doing that then it could hit west yorkshire aswell!
Yeah, at least is has allowed the temp to drop a little. Judging by the radar i reckon around 12-1?
-
Yes ive just noticed that too Mark. seems to be widening a little. Probably something to do with the approaching PL increasing the energy and disturbance of the atmosphere. Lets hope it acts as a homing signal for the main event for Yorkshire!
It seems to have sadly died!
Temp dropping here. 0.2c dewpoint -1c
-
Is this the current roughly estimated track?
I'd say that's the safest bet. Hopefully a tad further north and east
-

Yeah, definitely seems to be now. You watch we'll get that a gap and then the rest will go to the north east of us
-
Anybody noticed that streamer is starting to move a little more eastwards? Should hopefully start to hit Sheffield
-
For Sheffield and Chesterfield region we need to see that PPN around or to the north of Lancaster as it tracks south east. Seems to have matching up to the NMM forecast now.
Temp is hovering between 0.8 and 1c here. Precipitation if heavy will fall as snow. The rain reports are most likely due to the lightness of that streamer (so snizzle?)
-
I hope not To be fair even this plucky little streamer is trying it's best to hang on, like the Tim Henman of snow streamers.
Yeah i've been watching that one on the radar, just too far north and east!
-
Wouldn't worry about the showers fading, Pennines shouldn't really impact this 'event'
-
Just had some light snow. Seems the Pennies are killing precipitation, except for those in the Midlands. Hopefully that nice little streamer can make it over.
With regards to tonight i'd place the eastern extremities as Leeds, Doncaster down to Retford. Chesterfield probably the best location

I'm glad I'm not working tonight I can tell you that! I think I need more beers...
haha i can't imagine what its like in the meto at the moment. I imagine some orange warnings later!
-
Latest from the ECM (from Nick) is precipitation entering NW England, passing through South Yorkshire and into the Midlands. So South Yorkshire and North Mids currently favoured. All we can do now though is watch the radar!

Yes should have clarified that further, lots going on!
From now on the radar, satellite and reports on the ground are going to be more use than the models
Thanks . An exciting evening! Yes, on to now casting, although good see a shift north
-
I sure do. The exit point of the centre is between the Isle of Wight and Brighton on the latest ECM. The further north and east of the centre, the better in terms of cold, but until now there was little precip modelled. There is now a streak of heavy precip going through northern England into the East Mids before moving into East Anglia. It's not especially cold but given the intensity of the precip I would imagine that would be snow. It's towards the west where it will be less wintry away from the hills.
Anyway, the precipitation amounts will be a nowcast situation.
By northern England i'm assuming through the NW, Yorkshire (southern parts) and into the east mids? Going to be a long night!
-
I would't be ruling out West Yorkshire just yet, however areas with a chance, imo, are those in the western and southern areas of the region
-
The charts Mark Bayley post from the NMM are in my opinion about right.
I think i'd agree, although perhaps move the track a nudge north and east based on the radar. Could easily give another 5-15cm for those caught in it!
-
12zNMM
Heavy snow for the South Yorkshire/Derbyshire area. Note that already the band is further east.

-
12zNMM. Already further east !
NW England by midnight, perhaps (slightly) further east?
Spell of heavy snow for South Yorkshire, North and East Midlands

Reports of some thunder in Glossop. Never heard thunder during snow, that would be an excitement
First band inbound, snow reports from Sheffield within the next half hour. Dropped a couple of cm's so hopefully replicated, Not sure if that 2nd band entering Liverpool will get anywhere near us. I suspect not (perhaps Chesterfield at a push). Looking forward to the first snow reports
