  1. Haven't had the heating on since around the 20th of March, I would like to hold off until the end of this month if possible.
  2. Indeed and if there is blocking to the east as shown wouldn't want a winter of stalling low pressures cos they can't get further east. I think blocking to the east can be more of a hindrence then a help.
  3. What also happened to the thinking that the gulf stream was slowing down?
  4. Yes,just seems to be month after month of above average temperatures. Anyone who wants a decent winter, we need to break out of this above average pattern. In my own location while daytime temps have fallen back ,still above average overall for the first week of Sept. The gfs 06z does show it cooling down around mid month but that's a bit away yet and could if course easily change.
  5. Must have been an interesting autumn. Wasn't November 1919 one of the coldest of the 20th century?
  6. Starting to look ominous already regarding this coming winter.
  7. Got over 2 inches of rain altogether here during yesterday and last night.
  8. Well don't think anyone really does how it will effect things. But another thing to keep in mind along with the usual teleconnections etc.
  9. A substantial stratospheric cooling event is now being observed over the Southern Hemisphere following a massive injection of water vapor » Severe Weather Europe WWW.SEVERE-WEATHER.EU Latest data shows a strong cooling event unfolding in the southern stratosphere, potentially influencing the global weather patterns Article is a bit long and drawn out but the jist of it is that a very cold stratosphere in the southern hemisphere could lead to stratospheric warming in the northern hemisphere this winter. As ever more research is needed . But what's going on with the stratosphere now in the southern hemisphere could it effect this coming winter?
  10. I hated winter 13/14, I couldn't wait for spring to arrive. Really hope we don't get a similar winter this yr. In one way it wasn't overly mild as such, the Highlands got plenty of snow that winter.
  11. I generally prefer autumns that are settled provided that temperatures are seasonal and not warm and settled like last year. Would only prefer a stormy autumn against the likes of last year, which just didn't feel like autumn considering how warm it was.
  12. Maybe this year Aug and September will trade places compared to many recent years. Surely its better that way anyway then a poor August and good September.
  13. We are in a warm period atm though since last year. On top of that our climate has changed since the examples you give .How many hot summers of late have been followed by cold winters? 2003 no, 2006 no, 2013 no,2018 no. After this summer well personally I doubt it....
  14. Another poor autumn then going by that for those who want a more seasonal one. Wouldn't be a surprise at all anyway considering nearly every month of the last 12 or so has been above average. If we want a seasonal autumn and decent winter we need to break out of this warm pattern.
  15. This song late summer 92. Not particularly a late summer vibe type song but always reminds me of late summer and of autumn 92. Can't believe its 30 yrs old already. Time flies.....
  16. Irelands record temperature for August broken today. 31.7c . Was 31.5c from 1995. That's 2 months in a row irelands record monthly temperatures have been broken.
  17. Another problem in not having a house heated properly even in a relatively mild winter is that it doesn't take long for dampness and mould to set in. Houses need heating in winter. Breathing in damp mouldy air wouldn't be good either for a person's health .
  18. People power is the only way. I believe there is a group in the UK called don't pay uk with 75000 people so far saying they won't pay their energy bills when prices increase again this autumn. I don't want to derail the thread but the fact that there is even a thread for this shows the seriousness of the situation and what we are facing this winter. Here In ireland the energy companies are recording record profits and I presume its the same with energy companies in the UK.
  19. I am worried about the coming winter with regards to energy bills. But still would like at least one decent cold spell. Anger is more my emotion then fear though. Anger at greedy energy companies who think they can hold us all to ransom. How the hell they are getting away with it is beyond me. Blatant robbery..... I will not let that scum take away from my hunting for cold spells this winter.
  20. Wonder is around the second half of Sept the time of year for the start of that turnaround,? Where dry ground can lead to cooler temperatures, more particularly at night ,while wet ground produces, latent heat .
  21. I'm not a big fan of the 6 weeks before or after the summer solstice. The amount of daylight does my head in a bit especially in the mornings. So at this time of year I look forward to more normal amount of daylight hrs coupled with the sun becoming more gentle in the sky........
  22. True, a place of perpetual autumn lol
  23. Someone posted this map on an Irish weather forum a few days ago showing the max temp records around Europe. You can see the temperatures if you tap and zoom in. Obviously now the uk should read 40.3c
