  1. Agree, other than the remarkable heat of 18-19 July, it has been a very unremarkable year for single weather events at least. Feb was very wet and stormy, but nothing too unusual for these parts. August very warm and dry but not exceptional overall. We've had exceptionally long periods of very calm pleasant weather with hardly anything of note. Jan exceptionally quiet. The Spring one of the most uninteresting ever. June largely devoid of any interest as well. September has started on a lively note, at last the weather has something about it!
  2. I was 4-5 years old and have no recollections of the weather that year.. my earliest weather memories are of the very warm summer of 1984. My first real memories are of 84, music and school etc. I do though recall I think a storm on New Years Eve 83, we had no power.. Looking at what happened, the summer of 83 most notable aspect, a very hot one especially July. Jan 83 was very mild and wet. Feb 83 notably cold and quite snowy. March and April also cold, easter was snowy. The autumn rather forgettable, often mild, leading into a very mild December.
  3. Seen more lightning past couple of days than whole of the summer. There was one strike one day in August, and a dramatic show on the 2nd June, but other than that another very quiet summer on the thunder and lightning front. September turning into possibly one of the thunderiest ones in recent times. We were just on the edge of a very powerful electric storm about 6pm, tracked it opposite side of the lake. I have long reaching open views to the south west and west.
  4. The evenings are suddenly feeling much much longer... thanks to the thundery skies it went dark very very early this evening, by 8pm it felt like it was 10pm already, many outside seating areas of cafesrestaurants were empty and there was a sense of let's shut up shop, there is nobody about. It feels like 11pm right now, yet only just gone 9pm.. how do we cope in December!
  5. Interesting comparisons, been a long time since we had a Warm dry Aug, wet September, 1995 the last time, and I've noted the strong comparisons with 1995 and 2022 so far. 1976 also a strong comparator. 1976 and 1995 were nearer average temp wise though, 2022 is looking a mild possibly very mild one, but it may be the wet signal is the most important factor. None of the winters were in the exceptional mild category at least, though the second group only produced temporary cold at times. Dec 76, 81 and 95 brought very cold Decembers interestingly.
  6. Warm anomalies in the Labrador Strait I think are conducive to big Greenland ridging and deep trough to the west.. conversely colder waters in said region and south of Greenland tend to spawn cyclogenesis and low pressure to the east i.e. towards Iceland and UK..
  7. Seem to be experiencing what may be expected to happen outside of seaaon meant to happen. Snow storm Arwen in November, most thunder in September.
  8. Hefty downpour an hour ago.. another impending one about to hit us. This more ominous had a few strikes..
  9. Perhaps what we have now but by winter much colder air to our north.. or would we need the low to be to our south a bit more and not hang in situ to our SW for so long..
  10. After a bit of activity, this thread rightly gone quiet.. low pressure dominating equals tons of cloud at night, barely amywhere is seeing any breaks at present and nothing on the immediate horizon to suggest the return of cool clear skies. I will be keeping this thread alive in September.. just a feeling it may remain very dormant until October..
  11. Yes late Dec 2000 much more potent than 2020, but the cold lasted much longer into Jan 2021 than 2001.. at least in the north. Take the point second half of Feb and March of 2021 generally mild, unlike 2001.
  12. Many recent Septembers have by and large been settled quiet months with high pressure never too far away, at least the first two thirds. This year admittedly things are starting on a veey different note.
  13. I've long said September is our most benign clement pleasant month, but for any weather enthusiasts who like extremes it often makes for watching paint dry type conditions.
  14. Interesting 2000 and 2020 Decembers, these did bring some cold weather at times, Dec 2020 a cold start and end, 2000 just a cold last week. Jan-Feb 01 and 21 were quite similiar, mild conditions generally suppressed with some cold weather, but never particularly extreme. Dec 00 was very wet.
  15. A topsy turvy day. Heavy long lastimg downpour late morning, followed by warm sunshine in the afternoon, followed by another shorter lived downpour this evening. A much fresher feel this evening compared to recently, which has felt very muggy. Even so we still have 88% humidity.
  16. Always thought a warmer atlantic promotes high pressure. Many recent stormy winters have been aided by cold blob to our NW. Generally colder SST's result in even sharper temp gradient with the tropics fuelling the jet.
  17. Ok so all la nina years.. even more interesting!
  18. The radar shows a couple of red convective cells in the Irish Sea just to the south of Morecambe Bay, whether these die off before they hit the mainland remains to be seen, or they simply fizzzle in situ or move NW.. the Furness Peninsula could see some lively activity ahead of the main thundery band.
  19. 1996-97 and 2010-11 best examples of front loaded winters, with cold ends to November followed by persistant cold in December, lasting into January, but weakening considerably by mid month. I've commented in another thread how dry both 1996 and 2010 were, comparable to 2022, with exceptionally quiet atlantics, with high pressure dominant, both years had notable cold in the winter as well, winter 95-96 and 09-10, the comparisons are quite alarming. This year though we come on the back of a very mild winter, but it was also very quiet and often blocked, except latter part of Feb, just the blocking this year set up wrong for cold weather. Going further back, 1976 featured a very dry year until the autumn, the winter 75-76 was very dry indeed and very mild akin to the winter just gone, we had the exceptional heat of the summer - again same as this year, the December of 76 was very cold with lots of high pressure, difference to 1996 and 2010 was the autumn was exceptionally wet.. I don't know if la nina was present end 1976, 1996 and 2010.
  20. Ok, then definately a signal for a trough over the UK, cold and mild probably cancelling each other out and possibly notably wet - rain and snow!
  21. Long time since we had a Nov - Dec cold combo, 2010 I think. Prior to that 1996. Interesting to note both years were very dry, our driest two years since this one (so far), with very sluggish jetstreams and high pressure ruling the roost...
  22. The last time we had such a lengthy period of anomalous warmth was Summer 06 through to May 07 from memory, correct if wrong. The period May 07- Sept 07 was nearer average but it wasn't until the following summer we saw a shift to more sustained periods of average or cooler conditions.. 2019 brought our coldest minima of the season on 1st December, the rest of the winter was devoid of much frost - equally snowless year.
  23. You have very good memories, I tend to remember 'field trip' days and particular PE lessons outside more than many school days, makes sense I guess as you are outside experiencing the conditions more.
