  1. That's standard in Hurricane evacuations. If you end up on an Interstate in states like Florida, the Carolinas etc. you may see "Hurricane evacuation route" signs, these are the roads in question. Sensible idea really!
  2. Angers me when people are so pig-headed and refuse to evacuate. If they want to risk their lives, then fine, but there will inevitably be people risking their lives to try and rescue them when things go wrong.
  3. In principle it is a decent idea. But it has been executed terribly. If anything, last winter it just added confusion instead of making things clearer.
  4. I don't think our storms are severe frequently enough to warrant naming. I mean, how often do we get a storm that causes widespread significant damage and numerous fatalities? It's just become a crying wolf naming system, and a confusing one at that.
  5. So the Met Office have released a sneak peek of the names... It's evident that even they regard it as a light-hearted, jokey system. It's completely unnecessary. Can you imagine the National Hurricane Center doing the same?
  6. Yep, far too early for this, we're barely a week into Autumn. We'll revisit this in a month when we may have the slightest chance of actually having a half-decent stab in the dark at how winter will pan out. We might as well have threads open for next summer otherwise...
  7. Not to mention it being a joint venture with the Irish Met who have different criteria for naming storms. Oh well, it'll be entertainment.
  8. Facepalms across the land...It was an utter farce last year and I'm amazed they haven't binned it.
  9. I think in terms of longevity of the warmth and dry weather it was very interesting and pretty much exceptional. I've never known it be so dry for so long. But in terms of individual temperature extremes it was a little bit of a non-event. Ps. Any chance of adding your location to your profile please? Just gives us an idea of where "here" is when reporting weather stats! Cheers.
  10. Meteorologically, summer begins on 1st June, just makes it easier to keep stats "tidy". Regardless, I didn't hear a single rumble of thunder during any of the three summer months, that's really poor even by UK standards.
  11. Ironically, I was storm chasing in the US. If they happened when I wasn't here, then they didn't happen, much like March 2013 But even if I did see the storms in May, they occurred in spring, not summer.
  12. Thankfully we avoided too much in the way of serious heat. But this summer was utter garbage for storms.
  13. Ah you know it's September when this old debate gets wheeled out! No I do not want it dark on gloomy December mornings until gone 9am thank you.
  14. Well seeing as there's nothing I can do about it, I'm going to enjoy it, I don't need to be outdoors to be happy! I think we need a bit of perspective here. This spring/summer had 2-3 months of near-constant outdoor weather. I'm sure people can cope with a soaker of a day.
  15. For God's sake grow up guys. This pathetic points scoring from both sides needs to stop, if not, we'll have to stop you ourselves.
  16. They're now charging to take on hand luggage! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45289432
  17. Yesterday was a lovely day in the end after a grim start, and if we can avoid the bulk of the showers today then the next couple of days should be half decent too! The less said about Sunday the better though...although my mindset is getting into Autumn mode now so bring on soaking Sunday
  18. Genuine supercell? Blimey. We didn't get any when we were there.
  19. As a weather enthusiast I'll gladly take the heavy showers. Love me a bit of convective weather.
  20. I love sharply clearing cold fronts. Really grim out there this morning, light rain, low cloud, but in a couple of hours it will be wall-to-wall sunshine and much fresher conditions.
  21. Another reason not to fly Ryanair... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-45262871 I really hope people vote with their wallets and this nasty firm suffers.
