  1. Had a little look myself for the past few years: 2014/15 - 21 2013/14 - 6 2012-13 - 6 2011-12 - 2 2010-11 - 6 2009-10 - 6 2008-9 - 12 So, by my very rough estimate and all things being equal, we could be set for about 50 survivors to next winter. Staggering to think that about 90% of patches at the end of August wont survive to winter when we are perhaps only 12 weeks away from lasting snows.
  2. Wowzers! Could anyone kindly post a tally of the actual survivors for each year, for comparison. My understanding was that although 2014 had many patches left at this stage, not many survived in the end due to the mild autumn?
  3. Hi, could anyone let me know whether a frost is likely tonight? Just wondering whether I need to fleece up all my allotment veg as I heard someone say that there will be a frost tonight?! I'm in leeds.
  4. I'm going for Lerwick, 27.8 18th June... Only joking! I'll go for gravesend 20.3 6the April. Rekon it's only a matter of time before the high drifts East, leaving us wit a slack, long draw southerly/southwesterly.
  5. I remember talking to a friend in sheff who had abandoned even trying to walk to work, even though he only lived a mile or so away, as he was wading in it over his knees. The thought of him even attempting gave me a chuckle!
  6. Flipping sheffield, always seems to get lucky with streamers/stationary fronts! Even in 2010 when we had a stationary front and over a foot of snow, sheffield managed more!!
  7. Lashing down with soft hail. No sign of sleet, which is good. Colder air coming back in now, so should become much less marginal for those areas affected by wet stuff!
  8. What are the wet bulbs? As the temp seems to be getting pretty marginal, we'll perhaps need to rely on evaporative cooling? Can't imagine they'll be much lower than the temp, given how saturated the air is!
  9. There is an extremely heavy blodge working its way over leeds in the next 10-15 mins. I just hope it is snow!!
  10. Strangely temps have increased from a low of 0.4 at about 5pm to 1c. Still a light covering on grass/cars and areas of pavement from earlier. There is also talk of rain in the north west regionals, due to a mild sector of air. Apparently temps are forecast to start dropping again the the next hour or so, but I hope we miss any precipitation until it is all snow. Nothing worse than seeing a massive sleet shower pass over you, when it could be snow! The radar is looking quite good for later. Loads of showers packing in from the north west and a good, unstable airflow meaning any showers should be big and beefy.
  11. These sort of set ups often look awesome but fail to live up to expectations as there is too much mild/ maritime air rotating around it. Sure there will be a chance of snow, like we have seen in the past week, but looks like another wet snow event which quickly turns to slush. The gfs shows the vortex spilling over the Atlantic high before any decent cold gets established. Based on the pattern so far this winter, I would not be surprised if it turned out something like this. The erm is more promising, with decent height rises promising something more prolonged, but I shant hold my breath until it's t+48! I'd rather have nothing than that sort of snow!
  12. Front looks like it is ever so slightly slowing up. Looks like leeds might be in the sweet spot for once! Even if it pushed through at the current rate, there's a good hour and a half of moderate snow to look forward to
  13. Current temp -0.1 dew -2 light precipitation expected over leeds in about 45 mins based on current trajectory. Should easily be all snow given current temps and reports further south. Then we've got the main event into the early hours. Chin up people. In situations like this prolonged snow can pop out of nowhere! Watch the fronts pep up as they bump into the colder air and moisture is released!
  14. Radar shows it due to start hammering it down within the next 5 mins in Middlesbrough!
  15. A more organised band of snow heading from the north at the moment. I would guess it will hit our region in about 2 hours. I hope it will still be cold enough then to settle!
  16. Not necessarily in my view. If the blocking in scandi is strong enough, a strongish vortex in Greenland can just provider us with slider after slider. Not as cold as a raging easterly no doubt, but could provide us with copious amounts of snow in favoured locations!
  17. Looks like a classic battleground has been trending over recent runs. Much stronger scandi block, holding the atlantic further back, with what looks like another slider scenario setting up. Lets hope this trend continues. From experience of these sorts of situations the trend will be for the block to continue to strengthen/ atlantic to be held further back as we approach T+0
  18. How strange. Radar on rain today can't be that accurate, as it's showing blackpool getting hammered at the moment!
  19. Any reports from Preston-Blackpool? There is a big blob of snow moving in off the sea that will probably hit me in an hour or so. Just wondering what it contains? Sleeps or snow??
  20. Big heavy blob of snow hitting the North west coast. Our region looks like it will get a direct hit from that! Probably about an hour and a half away, but some showers to look forward to before then
  21. Temp 0.8 degrees and dropping away nicely now, having dropped 0.4 degrees in the last hour. Some big beefy showers heading into our region shortly, just in time for temps dropping! Amazing how much difference elevation has made today. Snow has not settled at sea level at all, despite snowing on and off all day, at my level (100m) it has settled a bit in the morning but become increasingly sleety/patchy as the day goes on, but above 200m it had really settled thickly, with most of the snow settling.
  22. Plus our slider looks like it's back on early next week. Will help the wrist skitters who were on the mod last night!
  23. Shower activity finally looks like pepping up. Uppers dropping by a degree or two over the next few hours which will also help to lower temps. Managed about 3mm last night but just had a moderate shower pass through with more to come.
  24. A band of light showers passing over West Yorkshire now. Annoying as I'm in the gap, and it's looking fairly dry behind this light band.
  25. Some shower activity looks like pepping up over our region over the next few hours. Annoying that Ireland is eating up our shower activity, but there looks to be some better activity developing off the Irish sea now. Fingers crossed!
