  1. I'm going to have to disagree with you there LS mate, a straight northerly is best for snow in Inverness except from a NEly of course (snow intensifies in the firth etc). There's nothing really in the way of Aberdeen and Inverness (topographically) to stop these cities getting heavy snow in a northerly other than a bit of distance across Caithness and the Black Isle in Sneck's case and Aberdeenshire in Aberdeen's case.
  2. There really isn't a 'massive' difference between the UKMO 00z and GFS 00z at 96hrs, there are just lower heights to our north and not by much. It wouldn't take very much at all to bring in cold a lot sooner so we'll just have to watch.
  3. Bear in mind that the cold over Scotland was a lot deeper than it was over Northern Ireland, so we'll probably be able to cling for it for a bit longer.
  4. All over in Glasgow's East - just a light covering.
  5. Precipitation hasn't reached the Sneck yet by the looks of the radar...give it maybe half an hour?
  6. It's been snowing fairly heavily for a while in Glasgow. No one else?
  7. It has got to be snow coming, surely?! The area of precipitation has just hit Arran, Argyl and Islay and temperatures in Glasgow are -2'C.
  8. Could we all put our toys back in the pram and start discussing the models like adults please? "That's it, it's over, I'm leaving" style posts are just a waste of space.
  9. No, you're right. By Saturday the ECM suggests a far stronger block forming and affecting the UK.
  10. The very heavy snow on Hogmanay really delivered for Inverness in particular, strong NErly winds pushed down the Moray Firth causing consistent heavy snow. There was a 10 minute period, which I'm sure Pete should also remember, which gave the heaviest snowfall I had ever seen in my life, and I've seen an Alpine blizzard! Certainly the coldest winter for the Highlands, although we failed to beat any significant records, there were a few days when some were talking about temperatures perhaps approaching -30'C or at least -25'C, but alas, no - just -22.3'C.
  11. What a change in the models this morning, GFS ensembles look a lot more favourable in terms of cold weather and the ECM suggests the block will win out against the Atlantic. Very much all to play for.
  12. From the models and looking at the latest GFS, I think all this talk of the cold disappearing is a little too imby. It's probably best for us all if we consider the UK as a whole rather than our own areas, in parts of Scotland for example this outcome would result in potentially very heavy snowfall for the Highlands. In saying that, the GFS does love to over exaggerate areas of low pressure and this could be the turning point - where, when and how strong the low pressure will be will determine whether or not we can build a block. As many have said, this is going to be very tricky to tell and anything past 72 hours is still open to debate.
  13. Hello everyone, been a while! Few pictures The road to the Cairngorms The Cairngorms themselves
  14. There's still some snow cover in Inverness, meaning that there has been 28 consecutive days of lying snow.
  15. Despite temperatures rising over the lowlands, it was the coldest day of the winter here in Inverness I'd say. Just been out and it is genuinely perishing even though there's not a breath of wind, -8'C day time max. Lovely! Now, for that the thaw
  16. The milder air is soon to hit the Highlands, but chin up, this has been a fantastic spell. We're only half way through winter (and less than half way through the normal period for snowfall!) and already we have had a lot more snow than probably the last few years combined! A few more surprises to come I feel
  17. Brilliant morning Pete, isn't it?! Temperature is actually dropping, thicker freezing fog has made its way in, just under -13'C now.
  18. Severe freezing fog here this morning, -12'C and everything is completely covered in a thick hoar frost: telephone wires, walls, plants, trees, bushes, roofs, cars and washing lines! Away back down to Glasgow this afternoon so will get a nice drive through the Cairngorms! Brilliant cold spell winter!
  19. I've grown quite fond of it, especially the contrast of upper air temperatures in the Atlantic
  20. I don't know, the latest GFS is beginning to show signs of the high retrogressing towards Greenland, it's all just down to how the Atlantic behaves.
  21. They are a lot further west than earlier on, I've been watching these for a few hours. I think any showers which continue to form should reach Inbhirnis from now on
  22. Lake of Mentieth? That's a rare one, there can't be many more than a handfull lakes in Scotland!
  23. That's all very well Rob, but your original posted stated that mild temperatures would make their way in to the UK by next week, this doesn't at all seem to best the case as 10'C day time max temperatures only just make it in to Cornwall and Devon by Sunday night (17th). Indeed, the GFS shows a push over VERY cold air towards eastern europe and Scandinavia.
