  1. Eh, the GFS certainly doesn't - it has backtracked somewhat from its previous suggestion with high pressure once again building over Greenland and the jet heading south. Less cold yes, but certainly not mild by any stretch of the imagination. Think you're going to have to wait a bit longer for those mild temperatures you desire Rob
  2. And overcast with no wind, could be the lowest day time max today (-15'C to beat I think?) if we're lucky.
  3. For goodness sake, if people look out for the elderly there is nothing to worry about at all! Cold weather doesn't kill old people, neglect does.
  4. This shot of the UK under a cover of snow doesn't require a log in, and can be viewed and saved by all http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/gallery/2010007-0107/GreatBritain.A2010007.1150.1km.jpg
  5. Aye and this is exactly what we want it to do. If it moves towards Greenland then this will allow low pressure to bring N and NE winds across Scotland, perfect for us!
  6. I've just finished going through the most boring search I've ever done, but managed to get a high quality large image of the snow cover! Enjoy! http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/gallery/images/1114m.jpg
  7. Imagine one of those sea tornados making landfall against those temperatures Going to be a very cold one tonight in Scotland, that's for sure. Edinburgh temperature rise might be to do with the system currently moving down the east coast, perhaps a few snow showers to come?
  8. -3'C to -5'C in 1 hour, temperature is really falling!
  9. Hope it doesn't reach here! I'm wanting cooooold tonight! Aye By-tor the Highlands are going to be very cold tonight!
  10. And we're off! Altnaharra just went from -10'C to -12'C! Winds calming across the Scottish Highlands and skies clearing
  11. Somebody phone the Met Office! It's 0'C in Rosehearty! Surely a record?!
  12. Certainly possible - I think any of the Scottish cities (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee and Stirling) could beat the -19.9'C record for the coldest city temperature too, currently held by Glasgow.
  13. Where snow has not been disturbed, 10 inches in Inverness with 19 inches just outside the city, drifts of 4 feet in parts.
  14. Ceart gu leor! Ach tha e ro fhuar an-diugh. Have you had the chance to build am fear sneachd yet?
  15. I agree with what you say about the anglicisation, Gaelic place names are very beautiful and the number of Gaelic heritage deniers in Inverness (although always a very small few) is thankfully decreasing: where do they think the Inverness place names Craig Phradrig, Raigmore, Inches, Holm, Slackbuie, Scourgie, Culloden, Balnafettack, Lochardil etc etc (I could really go on!) came from? Mel Gibson? Your Gaelic is very good Pete, especially since you haven't learnt any in a while! You should take it back up Pete, you've clearly got a knack for it Search beag air bheag (means Little by little), it's great or 's math sin, I should say! Anwhich, looking like a good northerly tonight perhaps?! All eyes on raintoday! Oh aye, and you were close! It's 'gaidhealtachd'
  16. A bheil e sneachd trom? Tha mi an dochas gum bi! :smiliz19: (Will it be heavy? I hope so!)
  17. GFS is suggesting that it might all be over by next week, but it's hardly been performing well recently!
  18. I really don't think it will be much of a moderating influence guys. This is high pressure in January, with existing snow cover and freezing fog would be likely to form...
  19. Regardless of the upper air temperatures it would be very, very cold. There is very little wind on these charts, uppers of +5'C still give us day time max temperatures of around 0'C so there would be very little in the way of melt.
  20. Not to discuss politics in a weather thread, but by voting for independence we're more or less keeping the same relationship we have with the rest of the UK. We will all still be in the EU after all, we will all live together on these islands and we will all still talk to one another - it will just be more fair and Scots can get on with trying to make ourselves a better people.
  21. There seems to be an area of cloud beginning to move in quite a swift cyclonic pattern of the west coast of Norway, I'll keep an eye on it - probably nothing
