God no! We'd have to be in an ice age for Loch Ness to freeze over, it's absolutely gigantic. Almost all ponds, burns etc have frozen over or have ice in them though. Ness, Lomond, Courisk, Linnhe and Nevis are very unlikely to freeze over I think.
By the by, the Barra reading is an error - I know the vast majority of us definitely know this, just incase there is someone sitting at home having a heart attack and who is just a guest viewing this thread! It's probably some 30'C warmer
Aye!! I'm thinking of a wee Highland drive today, get some flicks of Fannich and Teallach maybe.
I wonder when the Met Office will update the warning and forecasts for Sneck and the rest of the Highlands? Oh, they won't.
Dispersing freezing fog, hard frost and light snow all at once! Not a breath of wind and clouds moving over from the east, while fog moves in from the west with crystal clear skies in between - I love this cold spell!
Temperatures falling very quickly, -6'C with freezing fog. Well spotted Lady Pakal with that small band of precipitation, looks to be producing some small showers so far, keep an eye out though! Heading towards Inverness, Moray and Aberdeenshire I think?
Certainly the longest lying snow that we've had, now at 16 days with temperatures reaching as low as -15'C. The snow isn't as heavy as 2003 although that only lasted for four days. With the snow forecast to add another foot or so over the next few days and temperatures expected to absolutely plummet below -20'C especially in the Highlands, come next weekend this will be the most severe cold spell in the central Highlands since the 80s.
Inverness Dalcross' record is -17'C, although if as a low lying coastal airport it recorded this I'd expect temperatures in Inverness itself to be a couple of degrees lower, perhaps even colder in the likes of Milton of Leyes, Slacbuie etc etc. GFS is currently suggesting that day time max temperatures would struggle above -10'C in Inverness, with temperatures dipping down towards the -20'C mark.
I think Aberdeen's record is -15'C and Glasgow's is -19.9'C.
Hard to tell exactly how cold it could get (it will get very cold around Thursday, Friday and Saturday it seems), but in our neck of the woods it looks like Inverness could beat its record low temperature.
Not sure about that one Pete, the area around Inverness has temps on the right side of marginal with a lot more snow on the ground that Caithness, should survive as snow here until the colder air digs in behind.
Well that was an amazing night!! bliadhna mhath Ùr dhuibh huile (happy new year everyone!)
(Netweather wont allow me to put the letters U and an R together
Although this is nowhere near the heaviest snow Inverness has had (2006 and 2003 beat this easily), it's certainly the longest cold spell of this decade.
STILL snowing in Inverness and lots of heavy showers to come looking at the radar.
I'm from one of the higher inland parts of Inverness, now -7'C with moderate snow. The whole city is getting snow however and it's still -6'C at the airport and that's more or less coastal!
