  1. Nothing here in donaghadee. Just 70mph winds, rain and hail. It's been the same all winter like I said. A complete non event. Good luck to ones with snow
  2. Watcher I agree quite unexpected. Absolutely blowing a severe gale round the corner in Donaghadee and snowing. Snow is wet and not lying but blowing around alot. Lights flickering.
  3. Ronan I'm on co down coast and I'm sure I will miss out so if its the case for u then join the club. Inland areas have had not a bad year but coastal areas have been too marginal this winter and unfortunately have fallen on the wrong side of marginal each time. Maybe next year !!
  4. Cheers watcher. Have viewed the charts this year and everything has looked favourable until the event which has been a non starter. The easterly source hasn't been as cold this winter except around 10 days ago when the 850's dropped to around -12. This brought dry snow even to here which stuck around albeit for a day. I hope the forecasts are wrong and coastal areas do well due to the intensity and evaporative cooling.
  5. Why have coastal areas suffered with such a lack of snow this year compared to previous years? Any half decent event this winter has resulted in heavy rain / sleet or if very lucky wet snow. For whatever reason this year has just been too marginal. Can't get may head around it. I'm right on Down east coast and expecting nothing different this time. Anyone any thoughts
  6. There's been some great years living on the coast snow wise. But this year the temps just haven't got low enough and the milder easterly wind crossing the sea has had a massive impact. I don't see fri or sat being any different. I think like the last easterly in Late jan or feb we will see heavy rain or sleet but no lying snow which will be consistant with this winter. It certainly hasn't been memorable.
  7. I'm on the east coast and believe me we haven't done well and I don't think we will this time either. Too marginal. Watch this space re coastal north down and ards peninsula. Not everyone lines inland or at height unfortunately
  8. Blast The issue I wud have is there needs to be retrogression of the H/P towards the NW to allow the PV to drop down into Scandinavia and towards the UK. Simply the coldest uppers are well locked in in the artic / Scandinavia and can't extend into Europe due to the HP extending across towards Russia and blocking the coldest flow to Europe. Therefore the cold uppers in Europe are eroded relatively quickly. Yes the set up is good for the east / SE and south but the pattern is too marginal for western areas should any moisture enter the flow. It has been like this all winter. Dry, cool and sunny IMHO. Regards Johnny
  9. The problem this year particularly for western areas is the uppers haven't been cold enough. I live on east coast of NI and have hardly seen a flake this year. When the HP has set up to the north allowing a NE, E or SE flow the continent hasn't been as cold this year therefore hasnt had the feed of very cold uppers of previous years. The high has extended further east across scandinavia and russia this year so NOT allowing the very cold air to penetrate europe from the siberia / artic region. The higher uppers are then modified further over the warmer seas, even though by now SST's will be approaching their lowest values. This has made the difference between frost and no frost, sleet / rain instead of snow. I know the mainland has done well but this is by no means remotely close to 2010. Regards Johnny Ps see the ECM 192 12z 850 chart as an example. The coldest air locked well to the north and at the most -8 to -12 uppers in Europe. Memorable east or north easterlies have 850 uppers of -20 and below into Europe so by the time it reaches our shores we have widely -10 and sometimes -15 uppers.
  10. Looks great. Forecast downgraded slightly for NYC - worst case 10 inches with 50mph winds. Further north and east the worse it's to be. Boston to take big hit.
  11. Snowing heavily in NYC now and starting to lie. Wind has picked up. Rain to snow earlier than forecast so I guess it's sit back with a pint and watch the fun begin !! Will I get home to N.I. tomorrow nite? Who knows.
  12. CM - I'm in NY at the minute and flight home to NI cancelled until Saturday nite. They are talking about this being historic comparing to great blizzard of 1978 with upto 20 inches expected in NYC and as much as 34 - 40 in Boston / New England. A rate of upto 3 inches per hr with winds to severe gale / storm force. So yes forecasters and locals are saying it will be historic. The forecast is spot on at moment with snow turned to ice pellets / sleet at minute and then to snow by 7pm NY time. Regards Johnny
  13. Sori to hear of your loss pomeroy. Thoughts with you at this difficult time.
  14. No snow at all on east coast of NI. Green grass all around. Sleet falling and a near gale force wind. Inland and upland areas doing v well. But for me this cold spell is a major let down. Not even a frost. 2010 delivered 8 inches here. Couldn't even get 1cm this time.
  15. Ronan your not the only one I wudnt worry. Inland and upland areas are flying. Coastal areas green green grass.
  16. On east coast and the grass is green and the sleet and rain still falls. Awful !!
  17. Well as per the rest of this so called cold spell it is raining here on the east coast near Donaghadee. The odd bit of sleet and blowing a gale. For me a massively hyped cold spell that hasn't delivered at all here. No lying snow, no frosts, nothing. I know some have done well but it is nothing compared to previous years ie 2010 when streamers and frontal snow deposited 8 inches here. So far another very disappointing winter.
  18. MS - in Donaghadee and very slushy as was Bangor. Temp 2 - 3c. As the uppers are supposed to b -8 to -10 I can't understand the abscence of minus temps this year. Very strange. Couple of centimetres of very wet snow. It's something I suppose. Any thoughts??
  19. Not a thing here but very windy. The east coast was just too marginal. The drought continues !!
  20. Snowjon Where r u? Bangor or the Dee? According to weather D/P is -1 so can't understand snow not settling.
  21. Agreed MS no snow since December 2010. This winter has been a shocker and really truth. E told this cold spell has been a central / SE Eng event and certainly not nationwide. I could count the frosts on one hand this winter, that's how bad it has been !! Roll on the summer now and maybe synoptically winter 2012 / 2013 will deliver a true nationwide event inc NI
  22. It's a pity I can't say the same for N.I. No lying snow on low ground this winter at all to date and not looking likely to change. Very little in the way of frosts which I could probably count on one hand. December was probably the coldest month but with snow restricted to the higher ground. Very very disappointing. !! But I have to say the forecasts I read prior to the start of winter have been accurate having indicated a NW / SE split temp wise during February and well done to those who forecast this so far in advance. Just hope for a warm and sunny summer now instead of the dross of recent years !!
  23. From my reading upto 192hrs it's not good. Back to west / sw winds and mild temps.
