  1. Thanks jtay wind looked Southerly too, anyway only a tad above freezing so might see some snow, but rain not a good start lol
  2. Info please, during the day some very light snowflakes, coming home just now its raining, its not a wind up im about 10 miles south of Salisbury, anyone else seeing this.
  3. near misses but not a frost yet in this area, mind you my first recorded frost here is 14 oct so not that surprised, good to see things under way elsewhere.
  4. Many old wives tales give pointers to Winter, birds, berries ect a new one being a friend sea fishing and catching a codling in the Solent in September,it seems way early so who knows. However, to me,its the Netweather forum that leads the way, once we start seeing the old chestnuts,Close but no cigar, the form horse, set in stone,if this verifies its 1963 over again, retrogression to Greenland and of course the annual dispensing of Prozac by Nick Sussex, then you know that Winter is upon us.
  5. Mr Data,Apologies as this no doubt has been raised before but are your quoted ststistics like a rainfall CET as there are so many local and regional differences.
  6. just a bit of info please, the mild nest week at least will change things quite a bit,but what is the average Feb CET. Many Thanks.
  7. Well Stewfox, will we both get snow on our birthday, think your chance better than mine, right off pike fishing now, enjoy your day.
  8. Well in this part of Hampshire we were unlucky this time but nice to see the pictures ect on here, just wondered if anyone from the Biggin Hill,Knockholt area of Kent has posted any details, I used to live there and normally at times like this they got a lot of snow.
  9. Stewfox i wouldnt trust South Today forecasts ,as a gardener i have to take a passing interest in the weather and they are statisically very poor in my opinion, they may be correct this time but they spend too much time trying to be Z list celebs at the expense of the day job.
  10. This was a pretty quiet site comparitivly speaking over the last two years, especially considering the weather we had. However, here in Central Southern England i have seen more lying snow in the last two Winters than the other 19 that i have lived here put together.. Steve Murr sent me an informative, letter and stats showing that this part of England had the least number of days of lying snow, historically speaking ,in the UK. Luckily living in London and Kent prior to moving down i had seen plenty of snow. One mystery though is that my birthday, which is early Feb used to coincide with cold and snow, however that has rarely been so in the past 20 years. Its very wet and windy here tonight, might well have some tree work and fences to do by this weekend,if the forecasts prove correct.
  11. Here in Central Southern England the Summer has from a selfish point of view been fine, none too hot, fairly dry with decent sunshine amounts,i say selfish because i garden for a living and struggle badly in high temperatures and humidity,we did get lucky though because,as with last year the lawns were about to go white/brown again when we got much needed rain in the nick of time.
  12. Just a reply and thank you to Downburst for his info regarding gardening for a living in the Scottish climate, very enlightening i must say, theres me feeling sorry for them all up there and they are doing just fine lol
  13. Here in Central Southern England, where by the way im a gardener by trade,it has been quite unremarkable. In many ways quite similar to previous spring/Summer,we just about got rain in time to stop lawns going brown, very little in the way of high temps, which i was personally glad about, but i would say dryish best sums up this summer without being hot so all in all perfectly acceptable for me. One thing does puzzle me and i will make some enquiries and that is how do gardeners make a living in Scotland cold winters and wet summers, same i guess with farmers too.
  14. Hi Mushy, could have sent you some of the 2 inches of rain in 5 hours we got on Thursday, didnt change the ground much to be honest as we have been bone dry here too,i watch the model discussion every day,the models quite often suggest rain for this area, only for it to miss us which made Thursdays events even more of a surprise.
  15. Yes as a gardener based in Central Southern England i am nervous having seen GPs take on things,he may not be correct but if he is lots of outdoor work will suffer, just the mention of 1976 is enough.
  16. Yes our football club has suddenly had a rush of interest in its charity golf day all blokes on a overhyped wedding, however we are really in storm country this afternoon so fingers crossed we escape dry.
  17. You may be correct Badboy, this is not scientific and at my age the memory plays tricks, but see what happens this year,my birthday, which is feb 9 over the years has produced snow or cold weather on many occasions,in many areas,of course it is at a potentially cold time of year i agree but on numerous occasions it delivers. Why when i lived in Kent i would always have a party in the football clubhouse, the number of times pretty girls in very short skirts had to be ferried across the snow laden car park to protect the killer heels ect spring to mind,a tough job but somebody had to do it
  18. Crept in from CS England forum which is lightly used,36 here in Hants with steady rain with the Winter i have experienced here, truly anything is possible, for me an open the curtains job in the morning, although reports from this forum will give a good guide.
  19. Little in the way of a thaw today, unlike yesterday, cant do gardening job but getting plenty of snow clearing ect much needed, not sure what the near term holds but a major thaw appears unlikely.
  20. As a gardener i have noticed that the highly paid designers have been caught out.In the race to bring in something new all the time, much is from overseas, but its struggling in these conditions, whereas for years, with mild winters the plants were fine. I specialise in english cottage gardens, not so exciting maybe, but with stock that lasted the 50s and 60s ie hardy. Lots of rabbits and deer forageing,my bird table,as others have noted,is under siege. They are that hungry that they would eat my girlfriends cooking lol[hides]
  21. Here in Central Southern England with the exception of July this year mirrors last very dry march to june last year july soaking wet, this year july was also dry but august a bit in and out.In truth though weve been close to drought conditions until perhaps the last two weeks. As a gardener though hedges ect and fruit have been prolific, perhaps off of the massive influx of snow melt water in jan and feb.
  22. I have taken this article on face value and have used the last of my savings to set up Autumn Nordic ski trekking in the New Forest from late September I do have the option of log cabins if its not cold enough to build igloos obviously Netweather members will get a highly attractive discount.
  23. Just looked at the storm risk on Netweather for my area of Hampshire shows 50 percent chance is this possible and if so from which area will it come, everything seems to be going on in lots of areas away from here, not that bothered about thunder so much, this area desperately needs rain thats all.
