  1. Ideally: 21c+ but with a gentle breeze coming in the skylight descending upon you. Then it can be even warmer as the breeze makes it comfortable. In the 2-3 days (!) of hot weather we've had since we moved here 5 years ago there have been zero nights where it was too hot to sleep despite sometimes being 24 or even 25c up there (the only time it gets higher than that is if the window isn't opened but once you do the temp drops fast). More normally: Around 20c when you go to bed then falling which is comfortable enough for sleeping yet by 5am doesn't mean any exposed flesh turns blue with cold. Sometimes the skylight can be opened but this relies on outdoor temperatures being above 12c. Brilliant as they are for hot weather, they are very poor for the majority of the time. A 'normal' window across the room behind a curtain would be openable at lower temperatures but no way with a skylight looming above you. The worst: Sub 18c at bedtime with a icy cold night ahead. It will then fall to 12c or sometimes lower by morning. Normally I don't heat the bedroom (as it gets stuffy fast) but in the cold bits of winter its vital otherwise a dark Monday morning in January goes from a horrific nightmare to a horrific nightmare that came true... where its next to impossible to get up. Overall: Much like the whole house the warmer outside it is the better our bedroom fares. Facing east going to sleep is no problem, but weekend lie ins are a thing of the past!
  2. Thing is unsettled is ok - some rain is fine mixed in with sunny periods. It's the endless low temperatures, flooding and sunless weather that we have to fear. A lack of endless high pressure isn't the end of the world you know...
  3. Correct yes, I had a bbq in that awful weather! Stood my ground I did and lost.. ha. But no current patterns do not affect summer. Either way if its going to be unsettled at least it can be the warm unsettled type so make some headway in turning the damn heating off. From that point of view the charts look like an improvement to me!
  4. Grin and bare it like most winters! The cold season has just gone on far too long and 90%+ are fed up of it now- we've only got a few precious months now and it'll be going cold again! If we could have comfortable bbqs on the 15th November like we need heating on the 15th May it'd seem fairer - but then the UK is a cool climate location so not to be expected...
  5. I look forward to labelling you the same when it approaches room temperature outside again If I don't heat then this house will rapidly approach outdoor temperature so yes heating is most certainly coming on from time to time! Heating is still coming on at work too as it runs off a thermostat and not a calendar!
  6. Had mine off Sun-Tues last week but otherwise its been coming on for a bit morning & evening (or in fact anytime we're in and it feels chilly). No sign of retiring it for the summer yet. Will we managed a longer heating free period this year I wonder. Last year 3rd June was last switch on and it came back on during a late August chilly night. That gave us only 1 month out of 12 heating free. I know my place is chilly but that's poor by any standard!
  7. Yes last August did have some decent weather as I had a bbq and got to sit out in shorts & t-shirt till 10pm. Admittedly that was probably the only day it was possible all summer to do that but still! The late May spell was super except it began on a Monday, spanned 1 weekend (which I used to quietly get my garden ready for the following week) then ended on the next Friday turning to absolute cack for the (moved) bank hol weekend. My bbq took place in 11c with constant rain. Horrible. If that spell had kicked off and ended 3-4 days later it would have been perfect. And yes the weather now has no effect on summer as a whole! Same as that late May spell did nothing to improve summer 2012!
  8. Lets try to keep a little more positive - its only the 9th of May and things can & will change.<br />Just because last summer was mostly dire doesn't mean this one will be too. We berate people for the 'winters over' posts popping up in an early November Atlantic driven spell so lets try to stay a bit more realistic. This sort of weather isn't unusual in May - we need the rain if nothing else anyway. Lets keep an eye on the models and await that pattern change...
  9. Cool weather in summer becomes irritating extremely quickly. The warm season in our generally cool climate is already short enough without what little we can get being spoilt by endless even cooler & wetter conditions. It makes it seem ever more like we have a very dull climate as when barely 10c higher than the winter average maxes! We're in the wrong location for reliable sunny & warm weather of course but then if the overall averages go down it'll play havoc with our ecosystem & economy. That said, it was only a few years ago we were saying the same thing about how mild/warm our climate has become - then it flipped. It will flip again - just when who knows (perhaps this summer!). Remember cool & wet is pretty normal in May and does not affect the rest of summer.
  10. Hi Iceni - head to our very own gardening thread for everything you need to know: http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/73128-net-weather-gardening-thread/ But yes any kinds of low temperatures are of vital importance at this stage in spring and we should keep a close eye on the forecasts.
  11. Not at all. Living room is currently 18c. There's no morning sun to warm it and temps will fall this evening once the rain passes so the only way for it is down. 18c is fine for activity, but not to sit and work in (the missus is dress making at home and will struggle to do it with blue hands!). It'll need a 15 min boost to put it the right side of 20c.
  12. Lovely few days now gone sadly. Was great to have the heating off for 48 hours. Suspect it'll go on today
  13. Yeah tell me about it - been hard to work today with weather so damn nice!
  14. UV levels are very high - I got very pink/sore arms from just a few hours cycling (10am-12noon) then an hour or so in the pub (12-1:30) especially on the side facing the sun in the pub. Wasn't there something about ozone depletion this year making the UV index higher?
  15. You've had your fair share recently - our turn this year I remember sat in the pub on a soaking cold July 2007 evening with everyone really depressed. Terrible times!
  16. There was indeed some good weather last August- lucky for me it timed in with a walking trip in the Lake District. Couldn't believe my luck as was expecting some horrid conditions! And there was nowt 'horrendous' about July 2006 - it was a perfect summer month!
  17. Last spring wasn't dry - far from it! It might not be a first class summer but can take comfort in knowing - surely it can't be worse than last year!
  18. Ugh horrible chart that one was for June! I was so lucky to have been out the country for 50% of the month both in Slovenia for work (where it was hot, sunny with thunderstorms) and Barcelona for a holiday (where it was hot & sunny of course). No such trip this year and wedding day 22nd and at altitude in the Peak District. Can only hope late June really is flaming June this time round! But we can never tell so best enjoy this coming week best we can. Bit unfortunate that I'm spending this bank hol doing (indoor) work for wedding whereas late May holiday is the stag/hen weekends... just watch that rain pour.... (please no!).
  19. Not a cloud in the sky so far here today! Perfect spring weather - just notch it up 10c for summer and we're sorted!
  20. Sounds perfect for my wedding day- high pressure & strong sunshine for period around 22nd June- yes please!!
  21. But... what did they show a month ago? I remember checking up on the upcoming June's pattern back in March and feeling most disappointed to see 120% average rainfall and slightly below average temps... Long way to go yet but certainly encouraging!
  22. Very encouraged to see low pressure over Greenland- where it belongs! Could this actually be a decent bank hol weekend??
  23. Very encouraging charts for May especially seeing pressure lowering over Greenland. Things do feel a lot more 'normal' since that cold ended - just hope that goes on into summer and especially (for me) late June!
  24. The best easterly is a south easterly coming in off a baking continent...
  25. It's a special kind of sky cheese that we tend to decorate the place with from time to time...
