20.4c max here so exactly as predicted - no sign of any sun. Feels very gloomy indeed so worse than Monday (although temperatures are quite similar). Now fallen to 19.5c so a below average day today. BBC has it sunny 21c tomorrow - down a little on recent predictions but understandable with NEly winds in charge but hopefully sun does come out. Wonder if I can get a >27c out of this spell come Friday/Saturday...

Yes it is noteworthy - although not hot as 'heatwaves' go I always assumed that from a weather enthusiasts point of view heatwaves were up with extreme cold, storms, gales & rain. They all inconvenience us in various ways but we enjoy them as they are interesting weather. Unlike todays slate gray 20c day for example... Just a bit surprised at the negativity from some on here given that we've not experienced anything like this in seven years now. A mild night down to 16.6c. Now 18.5c but temps are capped as the cloud roll in at 0730 shutting out the sun. Glad this is only temporary!

Can understand - people go on about heat being inescapable and cold being 'fine' as you just wrap up to warm up. It's just not true - cold sinks into everything and throwing a jumper on doesn't make it feel warm in the least! Still 21c here - lovely evening with air flowing into the house! Well for now anyway - any lower and we're closing up!

I also work and also have to be up in the morning but have had no problem at all sleeping (especially last night as it was cool anyway). In fact I've been wide awake from 6am ready to go. Having fresh air in the our room all night makes such a difference to recycled CO2! Same at work - the vile headaches of late afternoon I get in winter from a stuffy room seem a million miles away. You seem to need less sleep (and food) in summer anyway so anything lost from the odd noisy 4am bird really doesn't matter. However I do understand doing night shifts is going to be tough at this time of year - its a very unnatural thing to have to do anyway least of all at this time of year. But you can't blame the weather - you're working completely against it. It's like me walking out on a freezing January night in shorts & t-shirt trying to have a bbq then being angry at the weather because I'm cold. Of course being your job and all you're unlikely to have a lot of choice in the matter so can appreciated the problem.

Spot on weather today - none of that nasty cold wind nor low cloud to ruin things! 25.3c max and holding up nicely this evening. Almost seems unreal we had such a cool feeling day yesterday slotted in 4 very warm days. The complaining I see on here about 'heat' is totally unreflected from people I talk to in real life that's for sure!

Model Output Discussion 12z 08/07/13
Bottesford replied to phil nw.'s topic in Forecast Model Discussion
But not everywhere has. We've had 3 days 25c or above so far this year with today following what many days have been like this year - coupled with a chilly NEly wind. Although we've beaten 2012's overall high I've recorded highly yearly maxes in all years since I began in 2006. A high to the east is far far better to bring more reliable hot conditions as well as bring up the humid air for storms. -
Normally it isn't bad although today they predicted 24c but we maxed at 21.6c (22c rounded at official stations I expect). These easterly set ups do seem to catch folk out with sunshine & warmth often predicted even on the day only for it to get no where near if the cloud doesn't break. This evening especially feels very cool compared to the last three for sure.

The almost constant feed of NEly winds off a cold sea this spring & summer has certainly promoted some big regional variations with western parts doing very well but your area especially prone to a constant chill! Hope you're right about the lack of cloud around here - today was odd in starting sunny then clouding up as normally its a early morning till lunchtime thing.
-
I'd like storms but only if they were part of the hot conditions and not the end of them! Also they have to be carefully timed as I don't want soaking on my way home from work nor do I want them on a weekend bbq. The idea of the high retreating west is not desirable at all - I know that means more chilly north easterly winds like today. Would prefer north-westerlies as at least they don't deliver ruddy low cloud!
-
Anyone any insight on whether low cloud will roll in again tonight? 26c is forecast tomorrow but not sure after today. We're meant to be heading to a beer garden with work tomorrow and need to know if I'm safe with shorts as I sure wouldn't have been today. Tonight feels cool compared to recent evenings - too chilly to sit out long anyway. A min of 12c forecast so better close up the greenhouse to keep them peppers warm.

The pain of being on the east and these frequent NEly winds. It has now gone but too late to warm things - but perfect for chilling my garden tonight dammit. 21c is windows open upstairs for sure (despite the cloud I've come home to it 27c in the bedroom but skylight will sort that out fast in this breeze) but not downstairs where it will simply fall to outdoor temperature as it too falls this evening. Fine when its 20c at midnight but no good when its 20c at 6pm. Left the door open while writing this message - lost almost 0.5c while I wrote it! But then its still 22.5c in here for now.

Small price to pay - plus it'd be colder too! Think today is lost as far as warmth goes - breezy and lot of cloud about. Now 21.1c after earlier 21.6c high. Soon as the winds swing east it all turns pap. Soon as I hear the city clock tower chiming that signals easterly winds & increased likelihood of cloud (and a struggle up the hill against it!). Hopefully tomorrow will be better.
