Where were you 25 years ago? Well if you were in the NW, you may recall the great gale of Christmas Eve 1997 which affected large areas of the NW, although surprisingly perhaps, not my present area of S Cheshire. I certainly recall a nightmare early evening journey in my car from my home near Lancaster to Blackpool and back on the M6 and A6, and finding no electricity on my return home later that evening. I headed south on the morning of Christmas Day, leaving my neighbours to pick up the pieces of fencing and hoping that the electricity would come back on in time to make the remainder of CD a less joyless affair. For me, the gale of Christmas Eve 1997 was only matched in the NW (since 1989) by the Burns Day gale of 1990 in Blackpool and the afternoon gale of 18th January 2007 in S Cheshire.
No such problems 25 years on and it continues to be a lovely mild sunny day!
This was ridiculous, calm afternoon, but thought it was a bit breezy walking home from the pub, wasn’t there a bad storm in 87 too?

Yes after an exceptionally benign first half to the year, we have since mid July reverted to far more extreme weather, with the heat and now deluges and thunder..
yes, extremes thrown at us suddenly

Could well be equal performance tomorrow. We are enjoying a long show it seems at present, with many intervals.
I’m thinking different weather patterns resetting after so many years maybe?

So today, a proper OLDSKOOL hardcore banging early 90’s style storm, no elevated quiet rumbles, lasted a long time too, very bright flashes eventually as it passed by, the Hacienda of thunderstorms, one very close strike as it was the instant snap crack and pop then the shock wave sonic boom, daughter was drying her hair and I made short work of that, unplug everything

Huge cumulonimbus cell to my NNW. Really solid cauliflower head.
The west and southern skies look very solid.
That’ll be the storm that passed by here, tell you it’s done some talking!

Distant lightning again to my south south/east, things are too far away for it to look as close as it did, I’m thinking there’s one hell of an anvil lighting up through gaps in the clouds, very very slight rumbles heard, it’s as quiet as a graveyard where I am so that’s helping the audio

My last day here! Are you all gonna miss me?! Thanks for the lovely welcome all! I will most likely be back next year ... nothing against the north and everything against my mil! Thinking about a garden centre today but kids want to go to the park. Anyone know of a good garden centre, cafe and park and/or soft play for kids in Lancashire?
Barton grange is nice it’s near Garstang, on the A6, make sure you bring your credit card though, may end up needing a second mortgage

It is indeed FH. I accompanied some DoE Award youngsters from a campsite in Buxton to Kinderscout way back around 1980 -- despite walking straight into the sun, at 9am, they were convinced we were going west -- they were holding the OS map upside down!
And, today, all those teenaged lads & lasses will be pushing sixty!
Thought you was going to say they’ll still be walking!
so you must be pushing 70 then?

That developed quickly. Seems to be developing further south as the evening goes on.
Lots of lightning and thunder very elevated, forks coming down but stopping at a certain height
