Well wow.. left Lancaster last night and temps were around 3-4oC (Up to 8oC during the day)..

As we hit Birmingham, we drove for 40 minutes through snow, which was often sticking to the motoray.. temps down to -0.5oC

When we got back to our 'manor'.. we just noticed temps plummeting.. at 1am it was -5.0oC, and out thermometer tells us we got down to a low of -6.8oC!!!!

Currently.. I'm heading out the door to work.. the sun is shining.. severe frost and temps have risen to -4.7oC... :):)

Not a bad night out to be observing eh?? Though with rear wheel drive car.. spouse to be was a little worried about us travelling sideways as opposed to forwards.. :):):)

SNOW ALERT

Well another surprise from the weather this morning. An area of sleet and snow, mostly light has developed in the past 2 to 3 hours.

The areas affected include Greater Manchester, parts of Merseyside across into parts of Yorkshire, chiefly west of the A1. This area will move south during the morning but should decrease in size as it does so. Some of the higher areas mentioned, and in its path, may get 2-4cm of new snow.

The team will reassess the situation later this morning.

Stay safe and listen to your local radio station for developments.

0900rs Monday 28/2/05

A crystal clear bright and very cold morning and the coldest night of the winter so far.

Yesterday's very heavy snow showers dispersed during the afternoon, with some thaw of lying snow in the bright sun. By late afternoon, temperatures had fallen below zero again and so ice and frozen snow became the main overnight problem. A further 7cm of fresh snow yesterday and a dusting overnight now brings the total snow accumulation to about 22.0cm since Monday evening - snow at some point on each of eight consecutive days now in late Februaury.

The cold dry air and clear skies may spark some convective showers in the far south east. However these are not expected to penetrate inland in the very light winds.

A developing low pressure system currently situated over Western Scandinavia, will deepen and track southwards. As it does so, the winds will freshen from the west. A warm front associated with this system will bring a band of rain sleet and snow as it meets the established colder air over Southern England.

Temperatures will remain at or just above freezing this morning with thawing on southern facing exposed areas, rising somewhat as the warm front pushes through, but falling again to below freezing this evening.

Expected high of 3C, feeling like -2C with windchill this afternoon.

Just at the leigh of some heavy dry snow that fell for 10 minutes giving a partial covering (due to the rate of ablation) the snow has cleared away now with just a few 'flakes' here and there with the chance of more potential snow coming in off the Irish sea
