The Earth's magnetic field prevents almost all of the UV solar radiation from solar flares reaching the Earth's surface. There has been a reduction in solar output at the UV end of the spectrum along with the sunspots. NASA have said over recent years that we are only just discovering that we actually know very little about the workings of the sun.
