Also did anyone see a bright meteor earlier?  Someone is going to have an epic meteor/fireball/aurora photo, unfortunately my camera wasn't shooting at the time

To see pictures of the northern lights from all over Europe - as far south as Italy & Portugal - really is astonishing. Millions of people across the continent will always remember tonight.

 Metwatch Amazing isn’t it and it’s rainbow aurora which is unprecedented surely?  I remember asking if rainbow aurora was possible but seems it is now!

Still getting  really bright aurora here, it hasn't stopped all evening, here is a quick video that I've massively downgraded the quality on just to keep the file size small. What an incredible evening

First time in my 45 years I've seen them, always wanted to. The strangest thing is I'm not religious but today I looked up to the sky and asked for a sign from my father who passed in January....i have recently bought an urn with northern lights on as he loved them when he saw them and within 2 hours I was witnessing northen lights and didn't even know they were due. Very odd. Anyway some pics...

And I saw a shooting star on top - presumably same one as above! Incredible stuff.

Angels & gods & mythical animals seem to be riding the auroras tonight, lots of sightings of different mythological creatures and things 🪽

Should be able to construct a timeline of the phases of the aurora based on the photos I've now all edited:

So as the display was beginning there were mostly faint greens with a touch of pink 22:30 - 22:55

Then from around 23:00 the pinks exploded. 

A plethora of different colours continued at remarkable strength through to 23:45.

Decided to leave home as it was getting late and had to cycle back. Didn't see much but then decided to take some exposures at 1:15-1:30am from home but with more light pollution and still managed this, then called it a night.  

A life-time memory was definitely made this night for many

Finally back home after the drive back down the M6 since 2:30am. A unforgettable 5hrs of consistent Aurora that put on a show in almost every part of the sky, all kinds of colours & motion with a clear moonless view. I'm extremely glad that the NOAA prediction of the CME impacts was off by quite a few hours  now time for sleep and to sort through +350 images some-time later on this afternoon.

Later on it was also seen widely across N. America, seems to be slowly losing intensity here in western regions but still quite a bright display, less spectacular (so far) than what you saw, and auroral ring on NOAA nowcast is slowly losing width. I will give it another try later, but not seeing quite as bright colours even in very dark rural setting. It still covers most of sky and is not just a glow in the north as we often see it here. 

(Later on, improved display, bright reds and greens, well developed rays and seems to be increasing in intensity at midnight local time. Great pictures sent by contacts in Alberta and Ontario)

I’d forgotten all about it until I read a news page on my iPhone. My son was out on the decking at around 11 talking to his mates on the phone so I just popped out to see and lo…. 
Utterly amazing and so privileged to have witnessed it  wish I’d had the time to give my eyes an hour or so in pitch black to adjust properly but I’ll take what I got. Nature truly is astonishing

Got them here, could see them naked eye quite strongly after 11pm. Perked me up after a rubbish night of sport!
