Morning all... It's nondescript again today.

Can't be - I get a long lie on Nondescriptday.

Just finished reading a piece in the Sunday Mail, where a Meto spokesman warned parts of Scotland will be -12 on Friday, and that from Tues/Wed there will be frequent snow showers in the east of the country...

Interesting that a meto spokesperson is willing to go out on a limb like that, when everything is still out in FI (effectively)

Smiling quietly to myself, on us all being thought of as odd because of our fascination with cold weather and in particular snow. Oh well it could be worse I suppose.

Back the weather.......grey day 2C. Looking at the charts there seems to be agreement in the ensembles for the next few days - cold for the coming week and little in the way of snow for us until possibly Friday. Next week could be different. I will wait until nearer the time before looking into FI.

Our area is going to be dependent on the odd streamer coming up the Moray Firth.

According to the meto my area is going to have highs of 4/5 °C all week:whistling:

Dont think the meto has caught up yet, they are saying 5C for us every day through until thursday, can't see myself!:yahoo:

To ease the boredom before the cold spell starts properly, I thought I'd put up some photos of glories past:

Last cold spell:

Bumper snow in March 2006:

post-2844-12655386115917_thumb.jpg post-2844-12655386901917_thumb.jpg

Late snow in April 2006 (around the 9th, I think):

post-2844-12655387513317_thumb.jpg

Looking back through my photos I don't actually have that many of snow which shows how rubbish winters have been since 2004/2005 when I got my wee camera.

Edit: Sorry for the size of the photos, must remember to reduce size before posting more :(

post-9298-12655391625117_thumb.pngThat pesky -8 rule is coming into play - uppers until 12 tomorrow only -7! Any showers making it west of Stirling have a chance of snow up to then but the further east you are, the more likely it is to be sleety or rain.

Should be ok after this though. Gilly, there are clear signs of action brewing for up your way from the weekend onwards - remember the smooth easterly-northerly transition in December when the models didn't even wobble once about the northerly following? http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Recm2161.gif Note how slack the entire flow is and how low the pressure is - shortwaves and troughs are bound to pop up in every direction like the last spell in this flow. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rgem2401.gif

The GEM gives us almost the exact same setup as December.

The GFS gives something pretty interesting http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn2401.png

So in the shorter term we have this http://cirrus.netweather.tv/gfsimages/gfs.20100207/06/51/ukprec.png

Followed by this http://cirrus.netweather.tv/gfsimages/gfs.20100207/06/63/ukprec.png

http://cirrus.netweather.tv/gfsimages/gfs.20100207/06/87/ukprec.png

We await the NMM's verdict on it.

Chart from GEM this morning - 228 hours away so deep into FI - but nice to look at all the same.

gem-0-228.png

GEM been sticking to this in FI for a few runs now I think (get confused looking at so many charts). ECM 00z once its gets further out is going for something quite similar too.

Hi LS,

So here we are again at the lead in, to what is now a certain cold spelldrinks.gif

Loved yer wee you tube clip last night of the American forecaster, can you even imagine any of the straight laced BBC guys giving a performance like that?rofl.gif

Here's the thing though, America gets these massive weather events covering hundreds maybe a thousand miles or so with unimaginable ammounts of snow and as usual we are all frantically looking for where and when any or if any precipitation may occur whilst cold enough and which relitively small areas of our narrow little Island will be lucky to catch a few CM's mega_shok.gif

Keep up the good work mate as you are now recognised as our own resident technical expert and we all hang on you every post good.gif

Oh aye!

Where's ma snaw? I'm waiting whistling.gif

The last news report I saw said up to a metre in some areas.

Nice local take on the storm from Baltimore:

Nice wee vids too:

Another forum I use, there's a guy from Virginia who says they had 20inches fall over the course of Friday night/Saturday, and expecting another 10 through Sat night into Sun...

Very good. I like the one where the young girl is sitting in about 3 feet of snow and says "I want it to snow much more". No matter how much you get you always want a bit more.

Even better idea SP: let's start a snowstorm chasing team :) Screw tornadoes!

12z trickling out - and already it looks like the high to the north is squeezing the atlantic slightly further back - not sure if that means the pressure is building ?

It may well be that it is on the move: any movement towards Greenland is good as it means the high is retrogressing and this would obviously squeeze the Atlantic back.

Wish the Sun would show its face as there are some interesting Sunspots developing.

The sun has finally broken through here (!) but it seems so bright you wouldn't want to glimpse it :drinks:
