The surface wind direction has now changed here from an easterly which kept temps pegged around 19°C, it is now coming in from a westerly direction and temps have risen to 24.7°C ...!! Drier air too as Dp's have fallen from 14°C to 9°C and falling rapidly so sadly no storms for me...

I agree. In general the Weather Underground sites serving Tyne and Wear/Durham tend to be pretty good- Paul Tall's in Newton Aycliffe gives very representative values while Neil Bradshaw's in Marsden, with the exception of occasional suspiciously high maxima in late winter and early spring, also tends to be pretty good.

But I remember checking out the Weather Underground sites for the Hull district on the 11th May (when Reef was reporting a sleety shower from the area). Most sites were reporting maxima of 17-20C, and a few were approaching 25C, when official maxima in the area were down at 11-13C!

Yes, Ive noticed that around here too.

Even in the shade with lots of airflow, unshielded stations can still over report by a degree or two. Its very easy to underestimate how objects in the vicinity radiate heat. Im using a Davis with 24 hour FARS these days and find the temperatures can be quite different at times compared to my old LaCrosse station in an unaspirated shield. Due to good positioning, min and max temperatures are generally within 0.5C of each other - which is within acceptable levels. However in days that are very changable or with still air, the old station can lag and miss temperature spikes such as those you'd see in convective showers.

It reached 27ºC here this afternoon. Looking at the records on the site below, it's the equal warmest May day at Birmingham airport since at least 1973 (with 31/5/03 and 27/5/05).

I'm very surprised that you haven't seen anything higher than 25.3 degrees since 1963. What about early May 1990?

Not quite as warm as yesterday when we reached 26 degrees, todays max was just above 25 degrees and this only occured for a few minutes around 2pm. It cooled thereafter thanks to a fair amount of cloud which bubbled up, however, the cloud cleared by early evening to leave a stunningly beautiful clear evening - one of those with long casting shadows right up to sunset. Its cooled down quite ab bit this evening we are under 13 degrees, indicative of the cooler uppers descending down to this region.

Tomorrow will feel much cooler here, expecting maxes of only 17 or 18 degrees and tomorrow night will be quite chilly I suspect 6's and 7's.

There is going to be a massive contrast in maxes tomorrow between London and Lerwick - some 20 degrees difference.

23.2c on May 5th 1990 which is a very high value here so early in the month.
