Just to keep you updated I've got another lead. Just had this email:

"Dear Mr Staines

Many thanks for your email.

Can you please confirm if this is through an official company and if so, can you please confirm their name/website details so we can assess the risk?

Also, can you please confirm how long you are planning to take part in this activity?

Kind Regards"

I'll let people know how that ones goes as well.

Tim

I got a reply back from these people:

"Dear Mr Staines

The underwriters have agreed to cover this activity under our grade 4 hazardous activities, therefore an additional premium will need to be paid, the medical excess on any related claims would increase to £650, no cover under the PL section and 50% reduced cover on PA.

Kind Regards

Kind Regards,

So basically they're saying they'll do it as well. If you're planning on going with them probably best contact them first so it's all agreed etc and in writing. Dogtag worked out cheaper for me though.

For those looking for annual insurance, Sinclair will cover Storm Chasing, http://www.sinclairpremium.com using the advanced plan, the price is around £365 a year. Storm Chasing is a selectable option with no need to speak to the underwriters etc. I asked if they would do combined travel and storm insurance for short term deals, but unfortunately they won't do it.

Hi guys, as some of you know I've been in hospital this week. I'm going to have to change my medical screening details. As I am with go walkabout, do you think they will make changes to my screening or will they void it?

From previous experience I had a gall bladder attack which put me in hospital

A week before going storm chasing I contacted the insurance company they said because it was an unplanned illness I was still covered as normal as the policy was already in force but I had to follow the surgeon’s and insurance co advise.

I think if it was a pre-declared condition and any changes should be declared there should be no problems but it is always best to check before travel

Must have been a vicious gall bladder. I will have to keep my eye out next I go near one.

Hmmm, they gave us the base for the A1(M) stretch of motorway between Alconbury to Peterborough & the idea for the stretch of the A1(M) Durham motorway, both without bends :sorry:

Then they must have built the interstate from Colorado to Amarillo because that is the same

talking about insurance risk in 2010 when we stayed at the Big Texan i noticed 4 cyclists they were brits on a cycle tour around the midwest,

didnt say anything too them about it when talking too them they did seem a bit surprised when they asked what i was doing in the area and i said storm chasing,

but 4 brits (2 couples) touring Tornado Alley peak season on bikes didnt even see a weather radio clipped on handlebars etc. probably not even aware of the major weather risk in Amarrilo area that time of year what on earth in reality was there insurance risk compared to a car load of weather aware people with internet /weather radar and all hazards radio etc. and being able to drive away from storm if too dangerous.

The danger potential for them if caught out in the open in severe weather would be unthinkable giant hail, lightning, possible tornado, 80mph inflow, massive downdrafts etc.

I don't think too many locals would consider a cycling holiday in Tornado Alley in april/may june without being seriously weather aware.

Looks pretty much spot on with what you would expect for that period. With the exceptions of the Nebraska, Minnesota and Michigan Nado's which are unusually early seeing as they occured in the early part of March when they should still be buried in the white stuff!!

I personally think the Season is about 1 month ahead of schedule atm, which is not a bad thing when you consider the last 3 July's have been pretty incredible in the Northern High Plains.

May Tours = June

June Tours = July ???

1 to ponder I think!

ahhhh having an absolute nightmare at the minute with this bloody travellers health check. I ring them up today to change my details about my disclosed conditions and because I am apparently waiting for a referral (when i'm not; i'm just seeing a specialist to discuss what options are available to me) they won't bloody cover me!!!! I am so angry and am going to write and complain. Anyone else experienced difficulties in getting cover for medical conditions?

Interesting that spring has sprung so early in the US with May temperatures on the central and southern plains now. I guess this is due to the persistently positive NAO. I tend to agree with Paul that the severe weather season is a month ahead this year.

Back on the old topic of insurance. I've just signed up with Annual Travel Insurance and saved £90 (on a single trip policy) by buying an annual policy which brought it in line with Go Walkabout's 2011 prices ..the only downside as the above is my medical excess is £650 and medical & personal liability limits are halved whilst undertaking "Grade 4 hazardous activities" as stated above but well worth the money

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
