just received this email from the METO.

Dear Peter

Thank you for your email.

My apologies for the current issues with the rainfall radar, these are being worked on as we speak and we will of course update the images as soon as they are available. I'm afraid I don't have a timescale for when this may be. Thank you for your patience.

Kind regards

Dan

im using Sat24, and guessing where rain maybe with cloud tops?!?!

http://www.sat24.com/gb

tonyh, i can kinda see what you mean over Coventry way looking at sat24

ok, i can see a line of convective clouds forming from pretty much lands end up through Bristol and onto Lincolnshire. the Lands End, errr, end seems to be a CZ (im learning)whereas the other end is stretching out and moving eastward.

Oh thanks for that sbiggs, I can see it, now heavy rain on the webcam.

The juxtaposition of the webcams is perfect, as the Bablake one looks SE towards Draycote 10 miles away, while the reverse is true for Draycote, so you can see the rain shafts and black clouds from Draycote towards Coventry!

Lots of interesting clouds today and pretty gusty. Something could happen, but I think perhaps tomorrow may provide more.

Torrential rain here at the moment. Reminds me of Australia ! But no storms. How strange that I had that rogue single clap of thunder earlier and then nothing else. Are any more storms predicted for the SE later on today ??

Brief heavy downpour for about 3 minutes just outside Bradford. I will be finishing work about 4 and may go chasing.

Would I be right in thinking areas around the Humber and up into NE Yorkshire would be a good spot? I dont have easy access to charts due to only having a mobile phone so cant look myself.

Also, has Nick or anyone posted a convective forecast for today?

It's actually very clear here now, almost wall to wall sunshine, I'm hoping this is the sun that is needed to initiate convection this afternoon.

Disappointing once again around here with no sign of any showers hitting this area again. Both the radars i use aren't working either.

The trigger for severe potential seems to be a convergence line in the channel forming mid-afternoon:

post-5986-0-79200500-1310038328_thumb.pn

Given the steering winds (I like to look at 700hPa) some of these storms may edge into the SE quadrant later today:

post-5986-0-76480700-1310038413_thumb.gi

Although it is worth noting that GFS forecasts this line to head due West, and for precipitation to be mainly focused to the S of the SE, whilst NAE forecasts this line to move NE into S, and SE counties:

Still to play for, then - and potential doesn't really run out until after 9pm tonight, either, since that effect of that line brushes very close to the SE, so we might get an import:

Indeed Harry, we've had about 10 storms here in the last month and this probably beats all of them for rainfall intensity and timespan.

Will be interesting to see the radar returns when it comes back up to see if it really is as bad is it seemed.

SW to NE, but in a line around the LP system...it should gradually move east as the afternoon progresses, with more showers and possibly thunder developing then also.

It's a very messy setup though so predictability is virtually zero I'm afraid.
