Prince Charles’s fears for future of mankind

PRINCE Charles yesterday warned of the "terrifying" prospect of an ice-free Arctic Ocean within a few years

Just seen this on MSN , dont think thats gonna happen myself!! , not after looking at some of the maps posted in this thread , which is a good thread! only just found it , very intersting , thanks.

Massive bands of precipitation are currently moving Siberia - I'd either expect some large melt or large gains soon - probably the former.

The snow is growth is going quite well so far this month. Unfortunately, the models show the cool uppers staying over Eastern Siberia and even retreating a little for the next week at least, so little chance of the seeing the white patches moving closer to Europesad.png

More snow across Iceland this year too. I love this thread!

As for the snow moving towards Europe, I wouldn't worry too much yet. We're well up on last years levels already, lets hope we can sustain that.

We're well up on 2009 compared to where it was even a week ahead.

One thing of note this year in particular is the strength of ice on it's southern flank and towards greenland, this not seen for many a year.

Another point to make is that even if you get snow in western russia at this time of year it wont last long on the ground, because western russia is on average warmer than eastern russia. I think to bottle up all the cold in eastern siberia is a good thing, meaning that the cold pool won't get diluted by travelling west. Also, remember how scientific research has suggested its the southern extent of snow in October that's important - because southern snow can cause stratospheric warmings - not the longitudinal extent.

Also, there is more precipitation in western russia than east during the winter. It snows north of moscow etc in november/december whereas the further east you go the drier it gets as the autumn progresses.

Unfortunately though there is quite a reduction in the perennial ice compared both to 2009 and 2010 which is a worry.

Edit: I suppose the perennial ice is actually in the middle and so pretty solid. The ice reduction around the edges can probably be put down to seasonal variation and current weather patterns. Quite easily rectified under the right conditions at this time of year.
