A mixture of sleet and snow trying to fall at the moment in Bacup leaving a horrible wet mess outside.

There is a little bit of lying snow on the ground but only enough to give nuisance value although it looks like the main snow line is only slightly higher up the hill at about 1100ft. The temperature has dropped back slighly and is now reading 0.6'c from 1'c at 7.15am.

All in all, not a nice morning.

edit - snowing really hard now with big flakes and sticking but can't see it lasting to long.

Been raining most of the morning here in Nantwich. Showers have turned to hail in the last ten minutes, turning back to rain again now.

It looks like the current batch of activity for this immediate area has passed through now with a bit of sun peeping through although the satelite is showing more activity just reaching the lancashire coast so maybe some more will fall in the next hour or so. Off to Burnley now to pick something up so hopefully the road over the top is clear although i would imagine that there is a good covering at that altitude.

Don't think I've had any additional snow fall here since yesterday :(

No idea what chances are for rest of the day / tomorrow.

Looks like it was raining a lot last night. Most snow melted.

Currently hailing.

Now snowing very heavily in Bacup and settling well, temps have dropped as everything now covered including the branches that were dripping, this makes up for missing it all yesterday!!

I am watching that on the radar - the big clump - hopefully it will hit me in the next 30-45 minutes.

Am i right In thinkIng that if it hails for long enough it turns to snow due to evap cooling.

nah. hail isn't going to wick the temperature like rain and sleet does

Hail causes evaporative cooling far faster than rain or snow.

should be fine bud

Hail causes evaporative cooling far faster than rain or snow.

care to elaborate? i thought the process meant taking the latent heat away and rain would clearly do that best.

It's not taking heat away from the ground.

Cold air sinks, and hail is heavier than rain or snow. The uppers are -5C now, so with a heavy hail shower, it'll drop your temperature easily by 3 or even 4 degrees because it's dragging the colder air down from the higher boundaries/layers of the atmosphere.

Well it hasn't been doing that much today, the temperature has been quite stable despite heavy hail showers, however the conditions might not be conducive to this conidition today - I have seen heavy hail bring down the temperature before though quite markedly.
