Well it hasn't been doing that much today, the temperature has been quite stable despite heavy hail showers, however the conditions might not be conducive to this conidition today - I have seen heavy hail bring down the temperature before though quite markedly.

I'd get up and check my station, but I'm too warm in bed, it's freezing out there lol!

It's not taking heat away from the ground.

Cold air sinks, and hail is heavier than rain or snow. The uppers are -5C now, so with a heavy hail shower, it'll drop your temperature easily by 3 or even 4 degrees because it's dragging the colder air down from the higher boundaries/layers of the atmosphere.

that isn't evaporative cooling. and who mentioned ground?when water evaporates it takes the latent heat away. just like sweat on skin. hail has to melt in the air before that can happen. evaporative cooling isn't used for the term to pull cold air down

nor me. the evaporative cooling is used too much and in wrong context too often

Still, it has more of an effect than evap cooling ever will. I always notice it around here. Any precip will pull down colder air from above us, that's just as good, and is probably why that term is so over used.

god no. when it takes place at its best you don't even need the uppers to be on right side of marginal. snow wasn't even on the cards or even remotely possible this one time a few year back and it totally pasted it down. so yeah it can be better

I've just realised that despite us mocking the met-office graphics last night which showed snow over Wales and rain over NW England, well it turns out it's correct! It seems dewpoints over North Wales are much lower than this side of the border!

Wouldn't that just cause icy rain?

Not sure we have had anything since last night, looking at rain today it looks like everything has either slightly clipped here or gone around us. Footpaths look very icy outside.

Yeah, missed here in Disley :(

According to rain today, there is a lot of ppn in the area that should hit here - what it will be though I have no idea.

Please let it be heavy snow if this ppn hits soon. There's quite a decent amount on the radar so will be happy at that - come on!!

Yeah some of thats just got here, seems like very fine snow or freezing rain. Can't properly make out what it is.

Although I think only the lighter stuff is over me at the moment.

Uppers are higher in Buxton. We're down to -6.1C here, by the looks of it, you're still under -5C air. Give it time.

The uppers really won't make a shred of difference on the coast, there's to much wind and mixing of air.

Yup certainly.

Conditions seem ripe for hail though.

snow from yesterday still on the camper windscreen, raintoday showing a fair pile of ppn but its highly unlikely it'll be owt more than wet stuff..

i reckon catcam's showing where to go for those reckless enough...
