No where near that here, at 5.9mm, the heaviest rainfall had avoided us until now.

Feels quite warm today, especially when the sun comes out.

A sharp contrast with yesterday, which was heavy rain pretty much non-stop from the afternoon until the early hours. I got soaked to the bone.

A very wet 24 hours here, probably a good 2 inches of the stuff. Rivers are swollen for the first time in a long while. The front became unstuck over the Lake District, it was originally forecast to clear the region around lunchtime. However, in the last few hours it has moved north and we have stayed dry, it is set to move south again overnight with further heavy rain and some wet snow for the highest tops.

Tomorrow looks a colder day and generally damp with limited sunshine. Hopefully Saturday will deliver some welcome sunshine and should stay dry before the next onslaught of rain from the NW.

The outlook on the whole will see the north suffering more than the south in terms of rainfall, unlike recent weeks when the heaviest rain has been in the south.

The wind is the main feature of the weather here today with a maximum gust of 55 mph so far. A few brief and very light showers with sunny intervals between them so far today and feeling much cooler than yesterday, particularly when it's cloudy.

Some big showers coming over East Durham, nothing on the lightning chart yet though.

For all you fans of capturing the weather (and Mother Nature) digitally, I saw this NHS North West photo competition which is running in connection with the NHS North West Year of Health & Wellbeing.

They don't appear to have had many entries, but there are some good prizes on offer - holiday, balloon experience etc.

I'm not eligible to enter as 3 Counties so in the same region as MKSnowangel.

You can upload your best shots here: http://photos.yearof...ellbeing.org.uk

I hope that link works.

If this is in the wrong place - sorry mods, feel free to move it. : )

It may well be anaprop- there's been a lot of that over the North East in the past few years. Yesterday had sunny intervals and occasional light showers here, and the convection did not encounter a cap and flatten into stratocumulus as I'd originally suspected. Today, though, is dry, cloudy and windy due to the advancing Atlantic systems.

So, where's this rain then? It's been sunny all day and still is. Rain was forecast to arrive by mid afternoon but not even any cloud yet. It must have stalled.

Remarkable hail in Trafford Park 10 mins ago. Pea size, and beautifully lit by the sun breaking out as the shower moved away: millions of little white spots all over the sky. Should be over MAN airport by now, I think they'll pause take-offs until that's cleared.
