Notice the snow cover shape in 2010 and this year?

Hopefully it'll correspond winter wise.

that's what i'm hoping!

Haha it took me a moment to work out the outline of the UK due to the sea and ocean surrounding us frozen over. Was that created by Madden?

The slow march of snow back east continues, but counteracted by a big gain in China (fat lot of use that is to us though!!!). Scandi and Canada are still looking good though. Time for another Euro snowfall please!

How far west does the ice extend to? Are we looking at the eastern fringes of Novaya Zemlya?

Not quite that far yet, but it's getting there!

I mean in the future, does it ever reach that area?

Apologies, it's late! Yes, the ice does get that far but generally not until late January, early Feb.

As I suspected, the snow is starting to recede in Scandinavia.

Just as Aaron suggests, I assume there is some evidence of a meltback over parts of Scandinavia but come Monday, if not beforehand, things should bounce back again as is evident below.

The same might not be said of the rest of Europe I believe but Hemispherically we are still doing unbelievably well. Posted Image

With the UK at risk of some wet snow even further south, albiet over elevation and the 850s slightly on the wrong side of marginal, I don't think we can grumble. The cool zonal trend looks like continuing with some briefly milder interludes over in the UK but looking at things NH wise, its a case of as we are. No doubt, some gains, some losses to be had in the coming weeks. Posted Image

Yup of course, we are still doing very well! Especially compared to last year. The weather forecast indeed suggests a cool-down once again for Scandi, so worth keeping an eye on.

The ski resorts suffered badly last year as any snow that fell was wiped out within a day or two. This year however, we seem to be gradually building up the amount of snow on the peaks. Unlike last year, any milder interludes look short lived (less than 24 hours) which means we should see a decent ski season in the UK this year. Cmon the Snow!

Good news, the snow retreat back eastwards has stopped, for a day at least! Scandinavia has stabilised and the promised Canadian warm up hasn't had an effect yet. There has also been a noticeable increase in sea ice around the top of Alaska over the last couple of days.

I suspect much of northern scandi will easily hold onto the snow cover in the coming week, whilst we may see some losses in southern scandi thanks to slightly milder uppers moving in, but certainly no rapid thaw. Central Europe looks like staying relatively mild during the week ahead with no new snowfall. Compared to a number of years, the northern hemisphere has a very good cover of snow for the time of year. If we maintain the snowcover over east scandi and more importantly NW Russia in the coming two weeks, this can only be a good thing for anyone hoping for cold weather come December, as it will increase the chances of heights building in these regions which is always a good building block in increasing the chances of much colder weather in our neck of the woods.

I'll be keeping an eye on NW Russia in the coming 2 weeks, what we don't want to see is a Euro high setting up shop forcing the jet to crash into scandi pulling in mild southerlies over western russia.

Nice to see the snow showing in Scotland. Having some sleet here, but doubt that will make it onto the map!

It is precisely because of this Posted Image that I believe we could be entering a very interesting period of weather, to say the least. Keep your eyes on developments, once the ensembles settle down towards a determined trend, as they clearly aren't doing so, at this moment in time. Posted Image If we can tap into a Notherly in the next couple of weeks then this will be our first installment of widespread snowfall. Personally, I'm also quite interested in the here and now and seeing how that develops too.

EDIT: good to see damianslaw on my wavelength too, so I must reading the signals correctly. Posted Image
