Oh well done barry, you've brought a doylem over to this forum :p Anyways, I see the strat has taken a sudden downturn but now levelling out and so I don't think that would be a conclusive factor just yet. Plus in previous years it seems to bounce up and down anyways, I can see why people are going with a mild start as there is a fair bit of cooling forecast but I don't really think we can jump the gun yet.

    Welcome to the forum.

It'd be helpful if you could add your location to your profile.

Regarding winter, I'm looking forward to whatever it throws it us but of course it'd be great to get a healthy amount of snowfall and crisp days. The stratosphere is cooling as it does at this time of year but how it behaves over the coming weeks is open to debate but in reality only time will tell. I expect a fairly normal November, probably dominated by atlantic lows crossing the country but as always the progressive nature of weather can open the door to many possible scenarios. This could extend into December but no one can give a detailed description of precise events for 12 days away let alone December, but remember folks that zonal conditions can deliver for some, December last year here in Glasgow was an example of that but it's worth following the snow and ice thread and the stratosphere, developments here will give us a clearer picture of things.

'Incidentally, GFS and ECM long range 30hPa temperature forecasts maintain -70C or -75C values for early November over the Pole, which is average or slightly above average for that time of year.' - GP.

    Winters not over.

GP has just posted in the strat thread. Worth a read.....

Indeed, lots of interest over the coming weeks watching how things develop. Snow cover over EuroAsia looks likely to increase significantly over the next 7-10 days.

Some users, not mentioning any names of course, have been writting of the start of winter based on the Stratosphere even though it's not looking bad at all.

As far as im concerned, whatever the weather, winter ain't over until 0000hrs Friday 1st March 2013. Does winter really need copious amounts of snow for months on end Barry? A handful of snow events distributed through each of the winter months and few crisp days mixed in with the normal westerly winter pattern and deviation in synoptics would be more than enough to make a satisfactory winter wouldn't you agree?

I will even settle for Jan 13-17th 2012 type setup, very cold cloudless high, thickest frost for years by morning of 17th, 5 nights in a row of frost

I would indeed. Although, I'd like the snow to stick on the ground for atleast a week before thawing.

Hi Guys or at least I get the impression you're all maleblum.gif

In keeping with the title of the thread I hope and wish for light snow on Xmas eve, heavy snow on Xmas day and then boxing day it all vanishes. Or snow at centreparcs @ Elveden mid November as I'll be there then, that would be lovely.

Unfortunately our bank account can't afford a long, very cold winter this year so I hope it's mild here in London, but not like today, gray drizzle and fog is depressing all day. I'd rather have crisp and clear.

haha don't even get me started. I was checking in with the DM forum on a daily basis last winter and all i saw was "Winter will be mild, 15 degrees" and "Bartlett high, loving life!" it was just tedious trolling but i had to say, with immense frustration came immense entertainment. Some of the stuff posted you just knew was there to crave a responce. It's a shame really, also one of the reasons why im on this forum this time round smile.png

Oh and Skorge, does anyone remember him?
