Interesting times ahead - hope this is more of a noticeable cold spell, rather than a cold snap! Hope the papers haven't jinxed it wit their OTT headlines. BBC still cautious maybe they are calling it right at the moment but at some stage they are going to have to put a little more detail on the weekend and beyond.

The model run certainly has an air of 2010 to it.. and it will rival 2010 without doubt, if it can maintain the longevity.

Snow looks increasingly likely too, this is a cold spell that we will really be locked into with no obvious way out.

We are due a severe winter (and I mean one that puts 2010 to shame).. there's no reason why that won't be now.

Stephen

are you having a ramp there

Not a ramp, you have to love the cold to ramp, it's just there no backing down from any model as it stands, and I have particularly vivid memories of 2010 and how that came about.. it really is very similar.

Also we haven't have a serious winter period for many years.. we are due one really. Dec 2010 might have been cold, but it just doesn't cut it as a severe winter spell, when you compare it to others in the past.

I'll take that last day of term Dec 2010 anytime. The detail of that Fri evening wasn't nailed on till it happened, esp here on the coast, so anything resembling it will be great. Roll on tonight's ecm.

OMG ramping alert by the usually placid Northwestern crew.

Sorry but just got in from work and haven't had chance to look at the model thread.

Is this justified ramping in that our region can expect to join in the fun or is it the usual SE based Synoptics which we may just get the crumbs from.

is it time if I asked if it will snow on my street and how much I can expect LOL

Seriously though I really do hope that our region can join in the fun as far to often we tend to miss out on the action and even though we only occupy a small part of a small country we seldom see a regional wide event.

Fingers crossed that the next few days will be special but until I hear Diane at least it will be mild Oxberry talking snow I won't believe it.

Sorry folks but she never mentioned snow in the forecast.

Struggled to even get the word frost out of her mouth so winters over LOL

Matt Hugo on twitter -

The bigger picture (GFS ENS) paint a much milder scenario! meteociel.com/cartes_obs/gen… | 2 cold model runs doesn't automatically mean cold weather.

I want to ramp but none of the major forecasters are on board and no mention in the papers!

Forgive my ignorance but would it not take a relatively small shift in things for many of us to join in the fun? As things stand I am expect to be looking the window of the winter funhouse while everyone else plays. Let's hope the wall widens out though... (that's about as far as the analogy goes!)

I'm not holding out for any snow where I live, it's too low and flat. I need to relocate

It would but more southerly tracking systems have a habit of doing just that and leaving much of the region on the edge of the action.

What also tends to often happen it that once the Pennines are crossed the band decides to take the A1 and plaster the NE and Eastern Scotland even though it considered ourselves to far North to bother visiting.

Times like this can be damned frustrating.

I enjoy reading the model thread but reading some of the posts in there tonight is what puts me off contributing to the thread. Reading the majority of the posts you would think the whole of the UK is going to be buried under 3 feet of snow. IMBY ism in the extreme tonight. IMO.

Saturday looks good for some light snow in the south of the region.. if the charts for Monday verify then I'd dig out the sledge, good few inches of snow incoming. :)

Wont the Irish sea have an effect on our region though, as I posted earlier I'm just thinking it will be cold for us

Fully agree SFZ

It is always the case at times like these but tomorrow will be worth a read when the downgrade arrives and the air is full of toys being thrown from prams.

To be honest, after todays runs I can't imagine anything other than a downgrade of sorts and some folks simply aren't able to take that.

Here in the NW though, a lifetime of so close but no cigar gives you a different approach.

No, winds will be from the east meaning their will be no modification on the temperatures, we'll be feeding on cold, continental air.

In terms of precipitation; they're in the form of fronts meeting the cold air (battlegrounds).

Unfortunately there doesn't look like being much 'oomph' left in these fronts by the time they reach us, so any snow looks like being light at this stage.

Hello again SFZ , Hi Sparkle (I work in Leyland btw)

I do wonder if the model thread would be quite as populated if the NW corner was the bullseye of the anticipated snowfest...smile.png

  • April 2024 - Was it that cold overall? A look at the statistics

General perception from many is that April was a cold month, but statistics would suggest otherwise, with the average temperature for the whole month coming in just above the 30 year average for the UK as a whole.
