I cant fully understand how as much snow as is being mentioned will settle on the eastern half of NI on Friday with tempertures of 4 to 6 degrees.

Would any of the more experienced members give a view on this?

Thats the maximum temp in the 24 hour period, they will tumbling throughout the day.

It really is knife edge stuff. The next week could end up as one of the most memorable and snowy times in recent years (except for Cork!) or it could end up bitterly disappointing with just rain and sleet for many.

Northern Ireland looking best at the moment, with a probably and 75-80% chance of getting some significant snow over the next week, while that chance probably drops by 10% for ever 50km south you go from the border. But really, anywhere could get a proper dumping, apart from Cork that is!

The Met Eireann warning sounds delightful though, clearly following the ECM output.

WARNING for next week: There is a high probability of a severely cold week. Maxima are predicted to be in low single figures with severe air and ground frosts at night. Strong easterly winds up to mid-week will produce significant wind chill and make it feel bitterly cold everywhere. Some snow showers are possible especially in the east and south where there may be some accumulations but for most areas it will be mainly dry. Freezing fog may develop over the second half of the week as the winds drop and sub-zero temperatures then may persist during daytime.

Good news this morning then. Friend of mine works at Belfast international and they have just received a preliminary snow warning. 2-5 cms possible but further updates expected as the accumulations could be significantly higher! I expect met will issue warning in due course. Obviously further east could see more.

A lot of variability in how far the cold uppers extend west on the ensembles, even as close as this Friday and Saturday.

Plenty of scope for upgrades later today methinks.

That's good to see. Just a pity it is starting as rain as that will reduce the accumulations quite significantly. However much better than it was this time yesterday. Hoping for upgrades as all the talk was for us to get hit bad this morn

Cee Daley just tweeted there will be an amber warning for snow for N.i and that there will be much more snow than they originally thought.

Warning now upgraded to amber folks:

Rain will turn increasingly to sleet and then snow at all levels across Northern Ireland during the course of Friday afternoon and evening, with some places receiving accumulations of 5-10 cm of snow overnight into Saturday and as much as 15-20 cm above 200 metres, with drifting in the strengthening east to northeasterly winds.

well, well more upgrades today and oh the irony, irelands gonna get most of the snow now. good to see met eirann putting warnings out. remember folks look out for the elderly and infirm, looks a bitter cold spell coming.

while some parts of the country will get plastered with snow. just say a little prayer for us south and westies that we dont have to build an ark tonight. this potential snow storm on sunday night looks like causing disruption if comes off, then temps could plummet thereafter for a the rest of the week, a bit like december 2012 episode. and again folks, snow is fun if you like it, but if you have neighbours who are old or who suffer health problems, be a good citizen and watch out for them
