Just to add that tomorrow is a different ball game compared with today.Pressure was pretty high across the region today, hence the front we have at the moment is fairly weak....

....whereas tomorrow we are under low pressure which means the precip should

be much more potent, hence the amber warning from the met-office.

Then again,it could all go tits up!

Yes but this is what it shows for an hour ago:

And it highlights that it will struggle to be snow in the morning:

That isn't settling snow though is it and a fair few places across the region have seen falling snow? Or is that now depth lol

No, but there's no way it was as heavy or consistent as that.

No you're right but tomorrow must still be looking good for the meto to be so bullish with an amber warning no? I am as confused as everyone else to be fair.

Back down to 1C after reaching 2C an hour ago. Tomorrow's rain, sleet and snow is visible on the radar now as it pushes into the west of Scotland.

Still snowing and filling in gaps, intensity 1/5.

Have you got a proper covering then?

No covering here. Car and bin roofs - that's about it. Unless you're pretty high up, I'd struggle to see how anyone here can have a covering.

Even the car and bin lid is wet here, although the grass looks as though its frosty now due to the small deposits the snow left behind.

No, snow however is easily visible on the grass, and in quite a few gaps. Sets a good base if we do get snow.

Sounds about the same as Newcastle then, although the grass looks plain green until you shine the torch onto it! What we need is some clear skies to allow a frost to form and the ground temperature to go below freezing.

Flakes bigger now. 0.5c starting to settle. this could leave a slight covering before it clears.

What a difference a bit of height makes. In Windermere we managed 3cm covering everything, took its time but as the precip became slightly heavier early evening it quickly began to settle on roads and roofs after struggling earlier on. It was still snowing very lightly a couple of hours ago. However, in Kendal 70m lower there is only a thin white cover barely enough to cover car roofs, with paths mostly wet.

Despite nearly 6 hours or snow, the fact only 3cm total settled is indicative of how weak it was, and the very marginal conditions.

Pity tomorrow will bring milder uppers, but the snow should stick thanks to cloud cover and the cold night ahead.

Not a brilliant snow event it has to be said - but the first proper one of the season..

The 18z NAE looks good for heavy snow tomorrow afternoon and evening, although it actually looks dry in the morning when the mild sector is supposed to move through - goodness knows what will happen! I have a feeling there could be less convection than you might expect on Tuesday especially due to features wrapped around the low to the south spewing high cloud to scupper shower development. Hopefully not, but something to keep an eye on.

Looking at the met office's forecast for Newcastle, the cold has been intensified for later in the week, with temperatures struggling to get to freezing on Wednesday and Thursday. However no increase in convection.
