7.7 degrees here - must be due to my proximity to the sea. Bikini is ready for tomorrow.

have close friends in the devon & cornwall constabulary who have just text me to say they have set up 'gold command'

i guess they are really ramping up the concern, good for us enthusiasts however terrible for those who could do with out it!

Nope, i'm now in a semi-upright position and by tomorrow i'll be raring to go. Let's have a shipment of warming fruit liquers, a man-sized box of snowmens noses and a set of highly polished rails for my sledge, let me at it! diablo.gif

And get snow soon card

Absolutely spot on. Rather as I suggested earlier Mr. Beast. hi.gif

Based on my analysis of 4am update from the Met Office, I WOULD SIMPLY NOT TRAVEL UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO.

The original forecast has now been updated as stated below, the time and date of issue is currently under scrutiny.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South West England

Headline:

Windy with snow then rain spreading across the region.

This Evening and Tonight:

Persistent rain soon spreading into Cornwall this evening, this turning to snow as it continues eastwards overnight. Significant snowfall is likely in places with a risk of disruption. Cornwall and west Devon seeing rain again by dawn. Very windy. Minimum Temperature -4 °C.

Friday:

Windy with snow over many areas at first. Outbreaks of rain gradually spreading across the region through the day, although snow persisting in the north and east of the region. Maximum Temperature 6 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Further rain, sleet and snow expected, although with some drier, brighter periods, especially on Sunday. Remaining cold with ice and frost affecting many areas, and with freezing fog possible.

Issued at: 1600 on Thu 17 Jan 2013

And a wise man you are for posting such a warning!! I am excited, however also a little concerened. I am on call all day tomorrow and for the weekend. Hope i'm not busy.

One more safety message, its going to be cold, so if you have a wood burner or open fire and you are going to use it, make sure your chimney has been swept!! Im pretty sure standing 30 foot up a ladder in a blizzard will not be fun us in the brigade!!

Steady on. Portsmouth is an island afterall, is it not?

I seriously hope you do and I wish you well.

I'd like to say yes but part of me still says no, albeit a very small part.

snowed the other day overnight here and has been snowing today with a few flakes - heavier precip - strong winds low dew points favourable uppers and MetOffice and BBC forecasting heavy snow for portsmouth from 9am onwards. its not nailed 100% but you dont get much better than that

Ian has handly posted the meto definition of a blizzard so that we know what they are talking about when they mention it.

"Blizzard definition: doesn't just mean heavy snow. Wind must also blow around 30mph, severe drifting occurs & vis 200m"

Also from a meto press release "An amber warning is in place for other parts of Wales, western England, the Midlands and central and southern England, as well as Northern Ireland where accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are expected and 20 cm or more over the hills"
