Back to rain / sleet now on coast.

Would suggest altitude, if you're looking for snow today

Horrible outlook, looks like The Pope took Spring with him into retirement

Looks like the far south west will miss out on any potential proper wintery weather next week aka channel islands sorry.gif .

Looks like the upper air will not be cold enough for some proper snow. Just wish all this uncertainty with snow can be displaced by certainty of warm weather.

I don't think the Channel Islands need and want anymore wintry weather! :p

I maintain that although the risk of snow is there for more northern and higher up areas of our region next week, the main point of interest will be the convective nature of the weather. Hoping for some solar influenced thundery showers.

Should be less cold, although still cool for the time of year, over the next few days now. The early part of the weekend looking rather horrid. Cool and very wet.

Met Office have me down as 4c max on Sunday so they obviously think something colder will return to start us off next week.

Just been having a gander through the models, could Saturday see a Lewp/Squall cross out region? It looks like it on the GFS but i expect the hi-res models would show this better when it comes in to the time frame.

For the less well educated on here, please can you explain what a Lewp/Squall is?

It's usually a very active cold front that has strong convective gusts of wind associated with it as well as a narrow band of intense rainfall.

It usually looks similar to this on a radar ..

I maybe barking up the wrong tree but that's the impression i'm getting at the moment.

Ps: Lewp stands for Line Echo Wave Pattern. smile.png

We seem to be heading the wrong side of marginal this morning , but were still well in sub 528 dam air and 850's are below -5 so in any heavier precipitation there could be some surprises later ... That ppn off the Irish sea is really building and pushing down towards the Bristol Channel on latest radar ... Just let's hope the Welsh mountains don't kill it ...

Thanks for that explanation.

Out of curiosity how does that differ from a traditional tropical squall? Are they similar set ups?

At Newton Poppleford, we had a 1 minute heavy hail shower, believe it or not, the hail had actually settled on the top of a nearby hill! LOL biggrin.png

Rash of showers heading south through Wales currently so expect further showers of hail, rain and sleet/snow over Devon and Cornwall soon.

Later this afternoon, eastern parts of our region could see the showers currently near the north east coast.

No chance them Showers near the East Coast are heading South , Were in a North West flow today and there is no way them Showers will get any further West than the East Midlands. However them Showers over South wales should carry on building for the rest of the Day and a few could catch Bristol ...

It's only midday. Depends how much solar input can expand the PPN instability along the disturbance. If showers keep forming to the SW of the current showers, as per the NAE, then eastern counties of our region, ie Hampshire and Oxfordshire could catch some.
