Seems that all the cold air and snow is flooding out on the Asian side of the Arctic...on this side in N.America the cold remains locked in across the Arctic in its entirety..its has remained warm across this continent with no snow or cold to be found anywhere apart from the coastal fringes around the Arctic sea...looks to remain that way for another 2 weeks or so.

Sobering to think that here in the SE we struggle to see scenes like this in mid-winter, let alone mid-October!Posted Image

You've said that before... and I have to disagree. When I lived in West Sussex (ok not east) we often saw scenes like that. You have to take into account urban heat islands - we are far more populated than Finland - and height.  A couple of winters ago, our neighbours had 14" of snow in 24 hours in Fernhurst.

Nice to see this thread coming along in spite of what distinctly feels nothing like Winter outside. The same can be said of at least the next five days too, anywhere in the UK. Whatever, it's very early days and very promising outside of the UK to our North, North-East and distant East. Please keep things respectful in here and value each person's views.

Another encouraging sign, as long as it's verified in subsequent model runs, the Northern Hemisphere Stratosphere profile is a-changing. Here's the NH view as of 26th October, when it hints at a broader change of stratospheric zonal flow, perhaps bringing North-westerly winds down to the surface over the UK.

Finally, the NH view as of 31st October, when it suggests a stratospheric zonal flow, bringing Northerlies, maybe East of North down to the surface over the UK.

All of this is a long way off but is certainly feasible in my opinion, we just need to build on this trend. One other thing, if there are any Strat experts in here, if I've got things wrong with my interpretation of the Strat charts, please let me know. Posted Image

Struggle ?? where have you been living the last few years SE Borneo ??

March 2013 coldest in decades heavy snows South East

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/summaries/2013/march

You would have seen the coldest December in 100 years , 2nd coldest in over 300 years heavy snows South East

http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/hi/uk_reviews/newsid_9344000/9344883.stm

2009 heavy snow falls South East

http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/hi/uk_reviews/newsid_7869000/7869750.stm

I could go on but the South East of England in recent years has seen far more snow then say between 1990-2007

Perhaps we all expect a 1947/63  every year and 10ft of snow every year and if we see a mild October its assumed winters over ??

Quite a big snowfall for the N/Hemisphere on Saturday compared to Friday, some slight ice melt though. Norway over the next 48hrs should see some quite big snowfalls especially western areas.

Hi Stew,

Yes I have to admit, not one of my most well reasoned posts and perhaps I should have said "sometimes in the London area we struggle"......but certainly there have been some very good years recently where even the London area has received some very decent snowfall and temporarily the landscape can resemble those parts of Europe that has snowcover for many months. But I certainly wont be writing off Winter, in October.

Looking very wintry on the Finnish/Russian border, this morning.

OOoooer. Falls nicely in line with my hopeful projection that things may well change for the better for us in the UK, albeit very slowly from the 26th October onwards. Just don't expect anything sustained but some early snowfall would be a most welcome addition in my opinion.

Antarctic sea ice still at record high and melt season seems to be delayed

As expected Norway is filling up nicely with snow but I do expect more snowfalls in the next 24hrs before a melt occurs as warmer air is driven over that area:

Well, well, well.  Haven't been on in a couple of days, but the N.H snow and ice is doing very well.  Westward expansion is looking very good indeed.
