This period of weather has been absolutely dire here with just 2.7hrs of sunshine in the last 7 days. It has been relentlessly damp too, with humidity above 70% for much of the period and with poor visibility.

The first 19 days of the month has seen just 51 hours of sunshine and we've seen fog on 5 out of the last 6 days.

Absolutely grim, there's no other words to describe it.

Yes ,dull and gloomy here too AGAIN !

The Lake District has been one of the best places to be in recent days for sunshine - not often you can say that. Most days have been bright at least with decent sunny spells, some days abundant sunshine and temperatures in the 18-21 degree range. Cumbria especially western parts does very well for sunshine under easterly airstreams - being in the lee of the Pennines.

It makes a change for the far west to be doing better than the east for sunshine, we know how terrible south westerlies are for low cloud and the kind of conditions the NE has endured in recent days. Whereas conversely the NE and east tends to stay bright and sunny under southwesterlies and westerlies..

The tables are about to turn now though and it will be the NW and west which sees the cloudiest duller conditions in the days ahead - normal service resumes,,

Leeming sunshine hours today: 0.

This makes it the fifth day with no sun whatsoever over the past 10 days - and a week of virtually no sun. Since the 13th, still on 3.9 hours - and 1.4 hours over the past 7 days. Shocking.

I think I got lucky by having a two-week holiday in eastern France earlier this month (where the weather was predominantly dry and sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 20s, and certainly sunnier and warmer than they would normally expect at this time of year).  There's been a large gulf between the type of settled weather that they've had, and the type that has affected north-eastern parts of England.  I noticed that even for 1-10 September Philip Eden's stats had most regions with slightly below average sunshine despite the very low rainfall, with Wales and western England being the only generally sunnier-than-average regions.

It wasn't quite as grim here as at Leeming during the period 15-18 September- I saw a little bit of hazy sunshine on all four days- but yesterday was completely sunless and today looks like being the same.  The low cloud should begin to burn off tomorrow though as we lose the easterly wind.

With the high pressure slipping further south it's been a sunnier end to the month here.  20C and sunny today, feels quite summery out there.  If the current model outputs are right, though, it should get a lot more autumnal as we head into October.

The extended summer will slowly slip away as we approach the weekend. Mild, even warm spells can occur in October but by then the leaves will be turning colour so any pleasant spell it have a much more autumnal feel with mist, fog, and perhaps frost. But what a good Spring and Summer it has been with almost constant warmth, with the exception that very cool week in August when we had that northerly.
