Really a case of watching the Radar and looking at the sky.! :cc_confused:  Computer simulation of precip is almost useless in these situations...

Yeah the resolution of most models is just too coarse to pick out thunderstorm development with any degree of accuracy.

Showers have started to form across the channel now.

The sharp returns in the channel that look like showers are anaprop.

Cloud movement has changed here the darker area has crept south as if their is a bit of updraft, feels like the making of a storm for later tonight. Not what I expected from looking at charts and the weather but like I said the forecasts seem to be so uncertain.

One can trace the line back towards north of Manchester from the northern line of showers. There is a recent one formed just north of Rochdale -  I wonder could we see something as far south as Crewe in the next hour.

The line of storms in the NorthEast of England are developing from a convergence zone in that area, also a lot of high ground to the West/Soutwest of that area giving the parcels of air much more lift.....

@Nick L; Yesterday you mentioned adding a piece about seagulls to your thunderstorm thread, well a swan went by me while fishing at the beach today, that's surely storm related as well? ;)

A swan! Be careful and keep a look out for funnel shaped clouds.

Blimey, looks like I'll have to do a whole new guide on birds and thunderstorms.

I don't mind, I might even do a special piece on the impact of pigeons on tornadogenesis!

Meanwhile, that storm to the NE has gone a bit berserk! Anybody underneath/near it?

interesting description of anaprop here - looks like the boundary layer cooling down above the channel underneath the current plume, causing a duct where signals will reflect from further away and show anomalous precip - I was wondering why anaprop only seems to show up in these situations  http://www.radartutorial.eu/07.waves/wa17.en.html

I know mate - I sat here ages thinking should I / shouldn't I now it's too late by the time I would get up there.  I am game to meet others in the NE for chasing too for future possible events.  For now I will radar watch and drool like my Dogue De Bordeaux :-))
