I'm sure Northerlies have produced no snow in my location in recent years ...

If you get a Northerly just off stright(towards the East) then we can get hit from (snow) showers and you be surprised how far inland the showers can get in Eastern areas, if its more NNW'ly, its a lot more touch and go especially for our area where we stick in further than other eastern locations.

I find Sunday a little frustrating too look at, you got the instability, low thicknesses, convective activity and the cold air but you havant got the most favorable wind direction whilst on Saturday you have but you got no real cold air to go with!

That said, surprises can and do happen though. I don't mind missing tonight's snowfall, its not a local event, its more frustrating when snowfall is on your doorstep but you can't see any falling.

For those doubting us getting much snow in the east check out the latest fax charts. Looking good between Sunday and Thursday.

Would post links but can't do it on my phone

Is Tuesday looking like our only window of show-hope or would you say there are chances before then, such as Sunday?

Ice warning out for tonight

Issued at: 1052 on Fri 30 Jan 2015

Valid from: 1600 on Fri 30 Jan 2015

Valid to: 1100 on Sat 31 Jan 2015

Icy stretches are likely to form on untreated surfaces on Friday evening, overnight and into Saturday morning. In addition, further accumulation of snow are likely on high ground, especially across the northern half of the yellow area.

The public should be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Road surface temperatures will fall widely below freezing on Friday evening and overnight into Saturday, leading to a risk of ice on untreated surfaces. This will be exacerbated by showers in places, more especially across Scotland where 2-5 cm fresh snowfall may accumulate above 150m with up to 10 cm settling above 300 m.

Further south, a mixture of rain, sleet and wet snow is likely, with most of any settling snow taking place above about 200 m. However, wet roads at low levels will contribute to the risk of ice formation.

Cold weather alert extended to 07:00 on Thursday 5th February

Current alert level: Level 3 - Cold Weather Action

Issued at: 0839 on Fri 30 Jan 2015

There is a 90% probability of severe cold weather and icy conditions and possibly heavy snow between 0900 on Friday 30 January and 0700 on Thursday 5 February in parts of England. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services. Please refer to the national Cold Weather Plan and your Trust's emergency plan for appropriate preventive action.

After a slightly milder day today (Friday), colder conditions will arrive from the north during this coming weekend. The cold accentuated by strong winds at times. Snow showers will affect a number of areas through this period. More sheltered southern areas of England will see fewer showers. Overnight frosts will give icy stretches on untreated surfaces, with the possibility of widespread ice.

Less cold conditions might develop later next week.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link:

warning in place for tuesday for snow more inland than sunday and monday

Pretty much following my earlier suggestions for Tuesday then :)

Issued at: 1113 on Fri 30 Jan 2015

Valid from: 0015 on Tue 3 Feb 2015

Valid to: 2345 on Tue 3 Feb 2015

Snow showers will continue to affect parts of Scotland and England during Tuesday. The showers will mainly be across eastern coastal districts to begin with, but through the course of the day, snow showers will move further inland to affect northeast England, the Midlands and parts of southeast England. Accumulations of snow are possible in places, even to low-levels. The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

The arctic airmass, by this time already firmly established across the UK, will continue to bring frequent and heavy snow showers to eastern parts of the UK. During Tuesday, a subtle change in wind direction will allow showers to spread further inland, with snow showers possibly falling quite widely across northern England (east of the Pennines), along with the Midlands and parts of southeast England. The airmass is sufficiently cold for snow showers to accumulate at low-levels and some locally heavy falls are possible.

Sounds promising, obviously still time for it all to go titticus verticus however ...

I was hoping Sunday would see us get some snow showers.

Seen this? Durham Pennines could be the place to be.

Big upgrade to warnings for Saturday just out.  Looking very promising...

Following a temporary less cold period on Friday and into Saturday morning, a very cold airmass will
spread southwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland accompanied by strong winds, spreading southwards
into northern England and north Wales later in the day. Frequent showers are
likely to form in this airmass, and with the cold air snow is likely to accumulate, even to low levels in places.
Periods of enhanced snowfall are possible within this general flow, perhaps more especially across the high ground
of Scotland and northeast England, but these details are more uncertain.
There is the potential for disruption throughout this period due to the accumulating snow and ice but also with temporary
blizzard conditions leading to very difficult driving conditions.

Looks like even lower levels MAY get some of the action

That's a Met Office ramp and a half :D

This is the type of situation where nowcasting is handy, because in an unstable airmass snow can (and will) crop up at short notice.

I am actually loving the Meto forecast for our region over the next few days.  Arctic air mass, heavy snow etc etc Northerlies can bring some goods to us as per previous experience.  They are also saying that some periods of enhanced snowfall due to the unstable airflow (that's how I read it) spreading from the North.

Here is to an exciting period of weather watching, and remember even if it doesn't snow in your own back yard it's still great to get excited at the prospects (if cold and snow are your thing)...

Nice looking chart from UKMO on Tuesday no wonder the met have an early warning out for snow

post-23289-0-87135100-1422634224.gif

Whilst high pressure is shown to gradually build in on UKMO it would turn bitterly cold overnight especially over any snow fields
