Have to echo some of the previous comments here. This week typifies the reality of this summer (cloudy, cool and windy) over what the models have often suggested in FI, ie sun and warmth. Very very frustrating and annoying season this year. So very dry here but yet often very cool and that bloody wind just will not stop. June was the best month, cool and windy most of the way through but there was quite a decent amount of sunshine. All gone downhill since the early July, though there were 2 nights here with thunderstorms which was good to see. There have only been a handful of very warm days, no spell of sunny heat at all which is normal in the SE most summers. Currently the warm sun is just over the French coast and Paris is having a lovely summer. Extremely frustrating to be so close and yet so far.

Once again its a decent summers day here. Certainly no cool feel to things with temperatures up to 21c. Despite rather a lot of cloud around theres some sunny breaks too so not too bad. One noticeble thing recently compared to the end of July has been how warm it has felt in the evening too.

The stats damn 2015:

Just 3 days over 25C, only one of which was sunny. 2012 had had 6 by this point.

First 20C was on the remarkably late date of June 4th. Then consider the first 15C was on January 9th, nearly 5 months earlier. May especially was just a waste of 31 days

No overhead thunderstorms all year

Not more than 1cm of snow, and never on the ground for more than 12 hours.

As of August 6th, not had a really sunny day for over a month. The odd afternoon or evening, but not a day.

Sub 15C maxima in the last week of July. Again, we hit 15C on January 9th.

Absolutely unrelenting wind virtually every day since late April, always from between SW and NW, predominantly NW. Low pressure, high pressure, cloud, sun or rain, that wind has been there without fail. No return of the westerlies this year, they never went away to begin with.

Only good points were a sunny April (which still failed to top 18C despite loads of high pressure) and sunny June, which people were slagging off at the time but is increasingly looking like the best month of the year. Though for once this area got lucky with the sunshine in June, so it might not be true everywhere.

All in all, the last 12 months have been just about the most boring I can ever recall.

This sums it up perfectly, only reason April/June not so good here is that all the nice days came on working weekdays with all weekend's being subpar.

Main problem with this year is days like today, 15.9c here and overcast whilst it's 22c and Sunny Spells in Brum which we were 'meant' to also get.

The highest temperatures today seem to be concentrated around the East Midlands and East Yorkshire today. I can only assume the sun isnt out around the London area as temps down there are a couple of degrees down on those up here.

As we head into mid-August, the models are showing signs of a hot prolonged heatwave for at least 5 days in the latest run. Fingers crossed it comes off....

All will be forgiven if we get a few weeks of sun and proper warmth this Aug! About time we had a spell of above average temperatures to make up for the many cool periods this summer. Though the models have teased so many times already and it's only actually happened once and that was for one day lol! Nevertheless, am keeping everything crossed. Edited by stainesbloke

The heat at the start of July was 15 days away at one point.. then it actually happened, even though certain individuals were insistent that it wouldn't.

PS, it's been a decent start to August here too. Average high for so far 21.6C. Further east you go, the better it has been, just one day below 20C. Forecast shows no highs below 20C. Every day has beaten expectations thus far.

If you follow the seasons astronomically, 7 August actually only marks the midway point of summer. Who say's summer is nearly over? :)

Exactly and given thermal lag favours the warmth in the second half Of the season overall there is still plenty to be cheerful about. :)

Must be about 100 or more baby moths all over the landing, we think they hatched in the loft. Sadly we're now having to hoover them up. When they get out of hand they really do get out of hand!

I never understand this either, the whole idea that Summer is over as soon as the days start receding. It was the 10th August 2003 when the record was set, we haven't even reached that date yet. And then there is October 2011 as well.

I'm not a huge Summer fan but I realise full well that the season is far from over!

I can never understand this argument as it works both ways. Would you call mid-March winter or mid-June spring for example?

You can get summer-like and winter-like weather out of season, but it doesnt change the fact the come 1st September we're in Autumn and 1st March we are in spring meteorologically.

Can't get one decent day in this rotten stinking summer. Not one day when it doesn't cloud up and/or rain :wallbash:

Not reached 21C since 12th July and there hasn't been a day with 12 hours sun since 11th June. Stunningly awful especially considering May failed to produce a 12-hour sun total for the first time in nearly 40 years. It just shows the persistence of dire weather over the past 3 1/2 months making this one of the worst ever extended summer periods.

But that's the thing - there is no switch. The weather doesn't change as soon as a new calendar month occurs. Warm weather in the first half of September isn't out of season because the first half of September is warm anyway. Ditto with the first half of March being cold.

It's easy for stat collecting purposes to have each season set in certain chronological periods, but in reality it never works like that. That's why saying summer is nearly over when we have well a month at least of potentially warm weather to enjoy makes no sense.

Well maybe, but who wants to sit outside at 7PM with the barbecue in september, when you can't see anything because the sun has set?

Who want to have a barbecue in the first place? ;-)
