Looking at the GOES floater visible loop, looks like the clear eye has disappeared as it heads north towards the coast, but perhaps entering an Eyewall Replacement Cycle though a little too late before it hits land when the eyewall will quickly disappear as Patricia weakens.

Winds down to 165kts, pressure up to 900mb. Doesn't make a difference for Mexico though :(

Feels weird saying "winds down to 165kts".

Not even Usain Bolt can do that, but then again if the Daily Excess says it is possible you just never know.  :D

In structural terms would there really be much of a difference between 189mph and 200mph sustained winds?

Not really no. Though Patricia has weakened slightly as it approaches land, when we are talking about winds that strong it won't make any difference.

Sorry yeah, should have included the mph. For some reason I prefer working in knots with tropical cyclones.

Latest position and forecast track, still a formidable force even inland for a time.

Not sure if anyone picked up on the following quoted section but its is certainly mind-boggling. Explosive cyclogenesis in our part of the world is defined as maybe a couple dozen millibar pressure drop during six hours or similar but in this beast, there are some crazy figures mentioned, see below.

http://www.weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/hurricane-patricia-mexico-coast

"During that same time, the minimum central pressure of Patricia also decreased 100 millibars, from 980 millibars to 880 millibars."

*the above occured within a 24-hour window, as well.

Glad I'm watching this from afar, if truth be told.  :friends:

Even with all their experience that has to be a stupid thing to do.

Yeah, I mentioned that this morning, but it's definitely worth mentioning again. It's truly amazing!

Well, not downplaying by any means the devastating impact Patricia will make on landfall later, but the filling of the eyewall before landfall suggests forces such as stronger shear now interacting and weakening Patricia. And that's before drier inflow off the Mexican Plateau and the mountains just inland rapidly weaken Patricia even further. So potential that it may make landfall as a cat 4 now, which I guess is slightly better than cat 5 slamming the SW coast. But little comfort for those in the path.

Still a truly awe-inspiring once-in-a-lifetime thing to watch from our seats let alone experience it!

I've seen some terrific graphics of Patricia today. But not on the BBC weather just now!
