Looks like we are going to have the first storm of Autumn as secondary low sweeps across North Wales , North Midlands. As it clears eastward it brings a brief spells of winds gusting up to 60 mph across North Wales North midlands and east England and along the English channel.

Details will firm up tomorrow but one to watch out for you.

Thought we were going to be in the firing line for this but most forecasts now take the worst of the winds across the north.

Only just managed to reach 25mph today and that was with a wind warning across the southwest so not expecting much from this now.

Not even formed yet I believe. Also the met office naming is inconstant they have strong winds in nw Scotland in the past which didn't get named. One of the reasons given was there wasn't enough people living there so the impact was minimal.

Agree? 70 mph gusts in some parts and heavy rain with trees in full foliage?

If  I recall correctly, a storm would be named if it merits an amber warning?!

Not just those areas. Parts of North-West England looks in the firing line too with the bigger populations of Merseyside & Greater Manchester likely to have some decent strong gusts of 70mph+ in more exposed spots especially as winds move more to the W-NW funnelling wind off the Irish sea, these areas are under the Met Office advisory, as is pretty much all of Northern England.

As usual the Metoffice forecasts have an extra sprinkling of conservatism..

Winds moved south and lessened until it leaves the uk so Norfolk could get a battering early tomorrow.

Yes noticed the slight shift south and delay in deepening the low. GFS shows this well, slight changes now big difference

Looks like tonight's low has been designated Aileen, The first name storm of the autumn.  Might be worth renaming the thread. Didn't even know they've come up with a new list yet. I'm sure the first of this years tropical cyclones had a name like that as well.

The first tropical storm in the series this year was Arlene.

MetOffice storm names for this year are:

Aileen Brian Caroline Dylan Eleanor Fionn Georgina Hector Iona James Karen
Larry Maeve Niall Octavia Paul Rebecca Simon Tali Victor Winifred

Interesting to see the MO has issued an Amber Warning this morning. Seeing as trees are in full leaf I can understand why with the winds that are forecast.

Cowin hell  day  see that coming   Not amazingly high winds  but over a very populated area could cause alot of disruption.  my interest has now been pricked.

Strange how Met Office has upgraded slightly wind speeds from yesterday but XC Weather have downgraded.

I'm slap-bang in the middle of the Amber warning tonight, just wondering if it's worth heading up to the local reservoir at night that's westward facing and funnels the local winds into the valley. It's a relatively open area and I might get some of those stronger gusts that are expected for here.

The arpege going for areas similar to the met office for the highest winds  if not as intense  on the latest run. With trees in leaf could be interesting

Arome identical to the met office update. Possible 120kh gusts around northern England down to parts of midlands
