Of course you can forecast probabilities months in advance. It's actually not as hard as you think to forecast the macro scale. Of course, when you boil this down to a smaller area (micro level) you cannot forecast months in advance.

The micro scale is not what seasonal forecasting is all about though.

Look at now- the macro scale is really quite good...and yes this was pinpointed months ago with the general precursor SSW set up. It was glaringly obvious in the output in October! However, even with this great set up, it may not truly deliver for us here on a micro scale.

That sounds rather like predicting that the Northern Hemisphere will get warmer in Summer and colder in Winter...?

It's all about likelihood and probabilities Peter

By the time that system from the north gets here it’ll certainly be rain as we don’t tend to get snow in July.

Looks like pushing West into the sea and missing us but I’m watching.

That system is heading into Preston now and its coming to live as well. Fingers crossed we get the best bits before this year is out!

I think there may be a few surprises tonight, I know I’m in favoured area at 165m but these systems from the north even with warmer air aloft sometimes pep up this side of the Pennines.

Well if I can get a dusting at sea level, then some places even only slightly higher up will definately get something especially if the ground is frozen which it was here. It would never of laid on the ground in a million years if the ground was not frozen.

Same here; I think I mentioned it on the other thread that 2013 was the last decent snow falls; everything since then has been poor - even the BFTE.

Well although it was slightly on the wett side, we did get moderate snow which left a dusting on the ground. Better than nothing I guess.

Dont know how you managed to get snow and i didnt, whats your altitude like? Still unbelievably slippy here, proper frozen rain.

Hoping for some over North Manchester in the next few hours, looking unlikely but still possible as wind direction seems to have slightly changed to a more southerly direction. But for the most part seems to be heading through Preston, into Liverpool then Chester possibly , then maybe though North wales.
