Next interest Tuesday???

That trough will also tie in with colder uppers forecast by Tuesday so should mean good chance of snow to most levels if it comes to fruition. The problem today is that slightly warmer air is in place which is resulting in rain showers to lower levels.

I seem to remember once he said he was in the Lake District somewhere Ambleside I think.

If that's true then it's a false statement. Much of central lakes received over 3 inches 28 Feb 2018. Also last Feb. Admittedly last time we had more than that was late Jan 2013 about 8 inches. We've had many light covers 2-5 cms in recent years.

-1.9C here

Good portions of the region have at least got something out of this current set-up than the disaster of that mid February set-up last year.

On the face of it, that chart looks favourable for our region but it delivered next to nothing. Has anyone figured out why hardly any showers developed over the Irish sea? Really strange.

Yes, I remember matt Hugo being adamant conditions were perfect for many showers and then... Nothing

0.1C, a hard frost.
Is anyone getting any snow flurries? The sky is really dark, surely will be getting a few flakes soon.

Literally 5 minute light snow... thought it was falling off trees in breeze but was largish flakes but light...

Patches of cloud here with blue sky visible. Most of yesterdays snow thawed during the night but surrounding hills are still white over. 2c at the moment, quite a bright pleasant morning.

Yep, there’s milder air over us now which will explain a slight thaw during the night. Dew points east of Warrington are above freezing widely, which will also tie in to a thaw. Such a shame isn’t it.

Chart below shows the 850’s for right now

Seems the cloud left over from the showers in the east did the east of our region no favours last night. Everywhere frozen solid here in the W of the region, clearly the cloud couldn’t even reach here, never mind the showers, lol.

That’s crazy. Just something you wouldn’t expect in this setup. I wanted to plan a trip to Snowdonia. But obviously that’s not allowed. I’ve been checking the forecast for the national park every day, and they haven’t been above freezing for over a week. Would of been an amazing time to photograph icicles, frozen waterfalls and go for an amazingly snowy walk to the lake half way up.

Obviously, Covid (and mark drakeford) say no

Looks to be a trough coming in from the east, may give something to high ground in the Pennine regions.

No longer drowning in wet westerlies for a while?  NNE breeze.  Dry so far today.  Lovely warm sun.

Had some small bits of wintry dandruff floating through the air this morning, but more welcome sunshine than anything.  A little more organisation gathering just to the east but it doesn't feel as wintry today and will mostly likely be that sleet/rain mix.  Tues looks one for keeping aware of going off those fax charts.

Managed a brief bit of snow about 30 minutes ago as one of the showers managed to cross the vast countrynental  divide between here and Yorkshire but it was quickly followed by a few minutes of warm sunshine so as others have said, conditions today are not ideal for anywhere other than the highest tops.

If anyone is interested in rain midst the snow ..... !

Here's the rain update summary for 2020 in SW Bowland, Lancs

Site at 550ft / 170m approx, about a mile from the summit of Parlick Pike.

It is a Met Office rainfall observers site in operation since Sept 1968.  Same manual rain gauge used throughout.  Collection daily at 9am GMT.

The 2020 rainfall total of 2009.6 mm (79.1 inches) was the highest annual amount recorded in the last 50 years. Beat the previous record of 1984.0 mm in 2012.

2020 was about 35% up on the current average, 1491.3 mm.

Two months were record breakers. February with 333.2 mm was about three times the average.  July was over twice the average.

There were long dry spells in April and May and few drier days in September, but otherwise the year was routinely wet and cloudy and difficult for farming and other outdoor work.

It's interesting that the wettest years have occurred 2000 onwards. The computer program detects an upward trend in the annual data. See chart.

SW Bowland annual rain 1969-2020 & trend.jpg

I meant to add a summary snip of the record wet 2020 from the spreadsheet.  Figures in mm.  I kept the line showing the total rain since the start of 1969 !

Also the same data in chart form to the start of 2021.
